While the x300 LCD is much brighter than the x61s UL, it has a lower contrast ratio.

Is the lower contrast ratio a problem?

I usually keep my x61s a few notches below maximum brightness. Is the x300 at full too bright?

I'm not running it at full brightness.

What do you think of the screen?

I'm very pleased with it. It's clear, sharp and bright, and the colors look good as long as I don't have it at full brightness. Andrew's review at NBR has some good pictures of the screen showing different viewing angles.

Very, it produces the typical "washed" look known from 14" T or X models. I'm not surprised, Lenovo continues in their deliver-super-crappy LCD panels story. I'd expect at least 500:1. Sony TZ series have over 550:1 and MacBook Air over 700:1.

Do we get worse displays with every new model ?

the display technology plays into the formula as well.   both the UXGA IPS and WUXGA TN panels are rated at 500:1 contrast but the colors on the WUXGA panel aren't quite as crisp and vivid as on the UXGA.   contrast will tell you the luminance delta between black and white but it won't tell you anything about the color quality or accuracy.
