Does anyone know what FRU = 42T0298 is??

#1 Post by Johan » Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:08 am

I have stumbled across this FRU: 42T0298, which I believe is a T42(p?) motherboard, but unfortunately I have been totally unable to find its detailed specifications anywhere... :-( So, does anyone know (not just "believe", but really positively know!) what it is?

Thanks in advance for any help - I really wish there were some publicly available manual (or site) holding all of the various ThinkPad "Mfg. part" ASM and FRU/CRU numbers - many part numbers cannot be found in the HMM, and if I go to IBM's (spare) parts lookup site, I am only able to see what the particular part cost - not what it actually is in any detail!

PS: One further example of how complicated IBM has chosen to make things for ThinkPad amateurs like me: FRU = 42T0356 cannot be found in the HMM , and if searching on forum.thinkpads.com I discover that it is a 15" UXGA FlexView/IPS panel - which in the HMM is only mentioned being FRU = 92P6683. If I however go to the "Parts lookup" page for one of my 15" UXGA T42p's via this page, then I see there that a 15" UXGA FlexView/IPS panel is Mfg part # 92P6752 and/or FRU is 92P6753?!? I admit that I am a bit confused: Four part numbers for the same thing (??), but only one is mentioned in the HMM?! Some of these part numbers may possibly be complete assy's (the panel itself, CCFL, LCD cover, antennas, hinges etc.) but, really, how to tell, and where to retrieve this information??

But, for now: Thanks in advance if anyone can shed light on what FRU 42T0298 is?

Best regards,

Johan

If you do a GOOGLE search using FRU 42T0298, you'll get your answer.

Thanks ever so much, friend, for all your time and for your directly usable efforts to help me; everything deeply appreciated. Strange, by the way, that your suggestion never occurred to me - you see, I had already heard about Google, previously! Unfortunately, I seem to have been blessed with far too few talents to make Google come up with what I had hoped someone could point me to: A detailed specification for the 42T0298 (PS: In the case you don't know, motherboards for e.g. laptops come in a wide variety with different GPU's, with or without security chip, with or without WWAN etc. - and I wanted to see specifically what the 42T0298 came with). Google doesn't seem to know this... can you perhaps provide me with the link that I am unable to find on my own, but which you seem to know?

Thanks, Steve, for this (much more useful!) link - but I am still mystified as the ThinkPad T60 and T60p (14.1-inch and 15.0-inch) Hardware Maintenance - Manual February 2008 does not contain any such part?

I really, really wish there was some publicly available cumulative catalog over all the ThinkPad "Mfg. parts" and ASM's and FRU's and CRU's - both original numbers and newer "replaced by"... that would make life easier!

Best regards,

Johan

You've got every reason to be confused...

Little Googling that I've done brought this as a part number for both T60 and T42 boards...

To be continued when I'm less sleepy and at my own computer, as opposed to being a guest as someone's house...

When I get confused, I call the Part Order Department. They seem to have some sort of software which matches the original FRUs (in HMM) to the new one(s). But sometimes they are not 100% the same.

I don't understand why they would change FRU numbers either. And it would be nice if a better description could be provided for each part order.
