Does T61 14" SXGA+ 4:3 have off centered LCD housing??

#1 Post by Atari » Sat Mar 01, 2008 2:44 pm

I'm curious if anyone knows if the T61 14" SXGA+ screen (4:3 aspect ratio) have off centered LCD housing like the WSXGA's do?

Thanks,

Yes, 14´´ T61 have off centered display, because of antenna on the left side.

No it does not. The T61 SXGA+ screen looks exactly like the T60.

Wow, I did not realize that even 14.1" T61s had the offcentered screen. I thought that the chassis was the same as 14.1" T60. Here is a pic of 14.1" T60.

Lame.

Why not put it at the top or the bottom?

Oh well.... I guess I can quit pricing T61's now :)

Unfortunately this also means no penryn for me.

I would not let that be a deciding factor. The off-center screen does not affect viewing at all.

Yes it does. It is off-center with respect to the chassis and the keyboard. It is annoying. My wife prefers my T60 to her T61 for this reason. I am typing on her T61 right now and it is a little annoying even after I've gotten used to it.

This is one of the most staggeringly boneheaded decisions I've seen Lenovo make, design-wise.

I thought it would bother me before I got mine, but after using it, it is totally a non-issue to me. Doesn't bother me at all.

Yep! agree, when compared to the T60's it simply just does not look right - Maybe in the next "T"-series Lenovo will correct this minor / major (depending how you view it) shortfall and go back to their LCD bezels being symmetrical. :)

I, too, thought that it would annoy me to no end, but I purchased a T61 anyway--and I never notice it at all when actually using the machine.

(Historical aside: it's not the first time that a ThinkPad has had an off-center LCD.)

I don't find it disturbing at all that the left and right bezels have different widths. When using the notebook i don't notice it.

This is also the reason why I hold my purchase. It is annoying for me!

Actually, if you look closely at the venerable T42, you will see that it too is somewhat off centered, albeit not as obviously.

Yes indeed --- I'd never noticed, but the plastic on the left is about 3mm wider than that on the right.

Just noticed that my T60p's 15" LCD bezel is 2-3mm wider on the left than the right! - but does not look too out of place when comparing to the T61's 14.1" LCD bezel, which to me is a lot more exaggerated.

Question: What screens does this apply too?

t60 14" = centered
t60 15" = centered
t61/p 14" = off centered
t61/p 15" = off centered

The T60s are centered.
Past: T60 , XPS M1330, Inspiron 1420 & 1520, Presario V2010US
Present: T61 , Acer D150, T61 7663 (Parents)
Screen swapped between the 7661 and 7663

All thinkpad T61/p come with off centered screen and there is a logic behind it which I/others have referenced to many times.

Read the designer's perspective:

The Inside Scoop on Design.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Way to go, guys. I noticed that on my wife's T61 and didn't think much about it. NOW, I just noticed that my much-loved T43p has a similar screen bezel. The right side of the bezel tapers so it is considerably thinner at the top where the bezel rests against the LCD screen. Waah-h-h.

heh. You purchase an inferior machine because the bezels are symmetric. I think you deserve what you get.

I received my T61 less than 2 weeks ago and, like the review on Notebookreview.com states, you stop noticing the off-center bezel after a few minutes. It's nothing to base a purchase decision off of.

For those of you that that are seeming to choose form over function, get a Dell. Seriously, is it that big of a deal?

What the...ahaha...is this for real? That looks awful! Why would they design it that way? The IdeaPad's look better than THAT! :?: :?

I wonder what antenna it is beneath the left LCD bezel. 802.11n draft?

If it bothers anyone, can't you just replace the entire LCD assembly with the one of the T60? (centered LCD in exchange for rollcage protection) They are interchangeable right?

I've been using an XGA (I'm in the UK) 14" T61 for a few days and hadn't even noticed the offset LCD until I read this thread!

Can't say it bothers me - now the stripes not being on the tocjpad keys - that's a *huge* issue!
