T30 will not boot (Z light lights and nothing happens) ? ? ?

#1 Post by mattgecko » Sun Mar 02, 2008 11:33 am

I have a T30 (2366-68U) that will not boot up. When pushing the power button all of the lights light up (except for the hdd light), the screen flickers once and the Z light light stays on the thats it.

Dosn't matter if its running on A/C or Battery.

I have tried removing the HDD, memory and swapped the Cmos battery all with the same results.

Best guess is its going to need a new motherboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Matt

Try removing the NIC card in the compartment next to the ram compartment...

Symptomatic of the all-to-frequent memory slot failure. I can't remember which one tends to fail (my own T30 is out on loan) but I think it's the one furthest from the hinges. Anyway, try one stick of memory only, and see if the machine boots up. If not, try one stick in the other slot.

This isn't a show-stopper, if it's the failure - the T30 will accept 1 Gig SODIMMs and 1 Gig is enough for most non-Vista users.

Sorry about the delay I have been away.

Tried removing the nic card and it didn't change anything.

OK your right one of the memory slots has failed (it beeped on bootup), after removing that memory chip it worked perfectly for many hours, rebooting and everything.

Sadly I tried using the machine the next day and its giving me the "Z light" and nothing else again.

This is my cousins machine and he tells me that he thinks it was randomly doing the "Z light only" thing for a while and recently started doing it every time.

Thanks again for your time.
