Risk of Upgrading CPU on a T40 2372 12U

#1 Post by jayfox09 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 5:11 pm

Hi

I'm new on the forums, and I wish to upgrade my 1.3 banias for a 1.5 banias, but yesterday i went to ask on a repair shop and they told me I could fry my motherboard if I exchange the processor even if it comes out of a Thinkpad.

Is this true?

Thank you.

Jay

Not really. Well, I don't know what will happen if you put a Pentium 4 in there (they fit, but), but apparently you know what Banias is and are planning on getting a Pentium M.

There's always the risk of static electricity, of course. whever you open the thing up. The CPU's far more likely to die from that than the motherboard, though.

A lot of things could happen, but most are not very likely. I mean a bird could fly through your window and eat both processors, too, but that probably won't happen.

I've peersonally done this swap over a dozen times and forum members have combined to do CPU upgrades easily over 1000 times. Go for it.

(Please read about the proper application of thermal grease, it will help lower temps and reduce fan noise.)

And, welcome to the forum!

If its a 400MHz FSB Banias or Dothan processor, you'll be just fine.
