PCMCIA Compact Flash Memory Adapter

#1 Post by hbern » Sun Mar 02, 2008 11:19 pm

Has anyone ever tried to use compact flash memory card on a X41 PCMCIA slot using an adapter?
What would be the maximum memory capacity for a compact flash card (for example can a 32 GB compact flash memory card be red and writen on a X41)?
I have a limited 32 GB HHD on my X41 Tablet PC and want to expand my disk capacity using a compact flash memory card as a SSD.
Thanks

i think this would depend on the controller used, here is a review of Delkin cardbus adapter, which looks good though it was not tested for maximal throughput. 32-bit Cardbus should be PCI, which can handle some 132MB/s bandwidth, so no bottleneck here.

The review.

I personally intend to switch from 60GB Hitachi to CF as main hard drive (i hope to try 16 GB 333x pretec) and compensate the capacity deficit by software RAID of same capacity SD in the SD reader and CF in the Cardbus slot... i wonder if it will work, windows might forbid raiding of removable media...

Thanks for the info .
Please let me know if it works out.
I'm also planning to use a high capacity 16 GB SD memory card, but I don't know if the X41 Tablet PC reader can read high capacity SD memory card.
The Lenovo documentation does not mentionned much about the SD reader capacity.
Any clue on that?
Thanks

X41 supports sdhc card after patch in xp. There are some discussions in this group.
In my case I use a 16GB a-data sdhc(class 6) in x41 tablet without problems.

Thanks guys!
I downloaded the fix and run it. It seem to install properly (I did not see anything new in the hardware list though). I will have a look on eBay to get a SDHC card.

I finally bought a PCMCIA CF card adapter and a 16GB CF memory card, plug the CF card in the adapter and plug the adapter in the PCMCIA slot and everything went smooth. Nice fit, nothing sticks out of the slot.
I'm also awaiting a 16GB SDHC card for backup on the go.

Note that only there are two kinds of PCMCIA-CF adapters: cheap passive 16-bit adapters (usually around $10) and expensive 32-bit Cardbus adapters (like the mentioned Delkin, and Lexar also has them, usually around $40). The cheap adapters are extremely slow, and using fast expensive CF cards in them is a waste of money.
