Acronis asking for password I never entered!

#1 Post by Greg33 » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:38 am

Hi All,

I have run into a problem while trying to restore a drive image made with Acronis. A few weeks ago, I made an image of my entire drive as a cautionary backup and now I'd like to restore that onto another disk. However, when I attempt to open the backup tib file, Acronis keeps asking for a password that I have never entered - either on purpose or unintentionally. :?

Anyone have any suggestions or have I just created a backup that will forever be unaccessible and just wasting space on my drive?

Thanks very much,

Greg

Greg:

I have (fortunately!) never experienced what you do, but I just did a search in the Acronis True Image support forum and found the following threads which might be useful: password required to restore - but I did not set one! and Password issue or Can't access most recent backups. There may probably be more reports like that one - these were just the first ones I stumbled over. Please be kind to let us know your OS (Win XP Pro SP2?) and the version and build of Acronis (True Image??) that you are using.

Best regards,

Johan

Hi Johan,

Thanks for the reply. I'm using XP, SP2. I have since discovered what was wrong though, and rather surprised as well.

When I first created the backup, I was using Acronis True Image v10. However, I had since upgraded to V11 and tried to do the recovery with that version. That's the version which was asking for the password. I then uninstalled it and reinstalled V10 and I could use the recovery with no trouble at all. I'm happy that it could work, but I'm surprised that a newer version did not properly recognize a previous backup made from an older version. Unless of course I wasn't using the program properly.

Thank you again.

Regards,

Greg
