aftermarket ac adapter and battery (non OEM)

#1 Post by phattboy29 » Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:04 am

okay i give up... after doing a search for "T61 battery" and coming up with 60+ pages of nonrelated posts, i've decided to just post this with hopes of someone answering me, or pointing me in the right direction

i am consdering purchasing an aftermarket battery and ac adapter for my new T61 Thinkpad, if someone can recommend these items to me... is it worth the risk? and if so can you point me (link me) to a forum or site that has opinions on this

i dont mind ponying up the $30 for a 65W ac adapter but i need a recommendation on a bigger battery (yes i'm already aware of the size difference), since i currently have a 4 cell battery

thanks in advance

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The search function does work a little strange if you are not familiar with it. Here's a couple of tips:

- each text string should be at least 3 characters long
- you can use an asterisk at the end of a string as a wildcard match
- when entering multiple search strings, click the "Search for all terms" option (for an "AND" search, otherwise you are using an "OR")
- select a specific forum to perform the search

So, if you enter: " t61 battery cell* " , without the quotes, enabled the "all terms" option, select the T6x series forum, you will find 126 (currently) hits.

As far as answering your questions directly, I'd opt for genuine IBM/Lenovo AC adapter as they are a fairly new design. They have a slightly different plug on them from previous adapters which, from reading some threads here, seems to be unavailable/hard-to-get for some "universal" adapters. Most people would also probably recommend that you stick with a genuine IBM/Lenovo battery as they contain the proper circuits inside them for controlling the battery charging and reporting back to the laptop on its condition.

epinions.com generally has some reviews/comments about some computer items like this, as does amazon.com.

OE batteries generally last more recharge cycles than knockoffs. Just watch ebay, I found a brand new, in box 9 cell (rated for 7.8aH, mine has 8.4) for $70 shipped.
