T42 reinstall of XP pro - How To?

#1 Post by Amigo-2k » Fri Dec 03, 2004 7:35 pm

Alright, here is my sorry story.

I got a boat load of spyware on my T42. Nasty stuff the redirects, re configures, and even causes the blue screen of death.

I went through all the hoops of spybot, ad-ware, CDshearder, webroot, Hijack THis and so on (safemode and normal mode). I can be totally clean according to the programs, but as soon as I plug in or turn on the internet, it is all right back as fast as you can say big blue.

I read a post last night about going into the windows/system32 folder and deleting all of the dll files around the time of infection. I did that. But now I can't even get online at all. I get the following message:

"Windows could not finish repariring the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP Address

For assistance, contact the person who manages your netowork"

So my first question is how do I turn it back on. Step by step.

Also, if I just want to restore my hard disk will all of the problems be gone? And by restore I mean a complete reinstall (I already backed up my files and I'm ready to roll on this). Step by step how do I do this? -I know the access ibm button is involved.

I have already spent about 15 hours trying to get the spy ware off (with little help from other online message forums).

I hope you can help a fellow Think Pad guy out.

-Ryan

If you didn't screw up your ThinkPad, start it, hit F11, let it re-install and that is pretty close to all you have to do. When it is done, start it, re-register, give it a Computer name and Userid, then disconnect it from the internet, install a good antivirus/firewall/intrusion detection system, install Ad-Aware, then connect back up and you should be ok. ... So I restart the it and then while it is starting I hit the F11 key? Which will then show me a screen which offers to reinstall XP then? right?

Somewhat unrelated, but if you are still using Internet Explorer, please stop.

It seems to be more prone to spyware. Use Firefox. It's awesome.

I would reinstall your computer, put SP2, stop usin IE and use firefox.
Also get antivirus and firewall as well.

There is free personal firewall from Sygate.

Also if you are using the computer with administrator previleages during your regular use please stop doing that. it will make a lot easier for spyware other unwanted programs being installed on your computer.

So SP2, antivirus, firewall, and standard user. If you keep these 4 things in your computer you will have much much fewer problems with spywares.

A couple of things to the posts here:

1. If you have backed up your data, start the laptop, press F11. It will ask you if you want to re-image to factory contents. Say Yes and follow the prompts.

2. If you are having to activate because of a re-image or a BIOS change, something is wrong. That happened to me once, and it was bad recovery CD's (IBM replaced them).
