a22 ultrabay2000 sleep mode

#1 Post by ~Ramen~ » Fri Mar 07, 2008 12:49 am

Hi all, I was wondering if there was anyway to bypass my laptop going into sleep mode when the ultrabay device is removed. Is it like this for all thinkpads? It is really annoying and it seems like it should be hotswapable.

Cheers~ DJ Budd

Do you use the 'safely remove hardware' icon in the system tray to stop the device before removing it? It is not normal for a laptop to go to sleep if you stop the Ultrabay device and remove it.

Yes, I have done that, windows will say something like"Preparing to standby to complete eject". This also happens w. easyeject and simply by popping the remove lever out. I had understood that this was a "feature" and was supposed to happen, though please, correct me if am wrong.

Thanks Harry. :P

I'm wondering what would happen if you uninstalled easyeject. Make sure the FN-F9 settings in easy eject don't have eject from dock under actions for the ultrabay device...you can see why :).

Sorry I didn't mention it earlier, I uninstalled easyeject as is seemed pretty pointless with the "safely remove hardware" already there. I also don't have a dock( :( ). If it matters, it is a a22p. Thanks for your time :)

What OS is this, and is the drive in question an IBM FRU? What is the FRU #. Have you tried this with another drive? Does the drive show up in the 'Safely remove' menu? How does it show up there?

I think Windows 2000 will do this (sleep when commanded to eject the Ultrabay). I seem to recall running into this on the A31 at work...

Ray, I just tested swapping the optical drive with a UB2K battery with the T23 running W2K ... no problems there. On the other hand, the 600X goes to standby when I try to swap devices. I think the laptop has to support hot swapping to be able to swap without going to standby/hibernate.

kk so here's ALL of it (hopefully) A22p, XP Pro, dvd-rom(fru: 27L4355 genuine IBM) and I do not have another drive at hand to test it with. No easyeject. I guess it just may not support it? Mayhaps all UB2000 drives can't do this? Oh yes, and is shows up normally in the "safely remove hardware" tray ( Safely remove HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8081N - Drive(E:) ). Clicking this also puts it into standby.

The difference is due to warm swapping vs true hot swapping:

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/1195/ibm ... -a22p.html
A bay on the right of the case provides you with a fair degree of flexibility, with support for CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and CD-RW optical drives, or a second battery pack or hard disk. The bay supports warm swapping of modules, which still requires putting the machine into standby mode, but is preferable to a complete shutdown and cold boot.
T23 supports true hot swapping:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/1198/ibm ... d-t23.html
Although only one other spindle is accommodated, the Hot Swap design is inspired, with a simple lever enabling you to remove the Hitachi DVD-ROM in seconds with no system downtime.
