What doesn't belong?

#1 Post by rkawakami » Fri Mar 07, 2008 5:52 am

Here's a fun and educational exercise: What doesn't belong (or is obviously wrong) in the system description of the following eBay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0231064148 (A T23)

I found nine things wrong and have already messaged the seller (told him seven; found two more after I sent the note). If he changes this one, he's got another with an identical description:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0230351337

Yay - Friday eBay games! Does this include spelling and/or grammatical errors, Ray? :P

After counting the errors I found, I think I arrived at 7 (multiple instances of the same error I counted as 1). Spelling/grammatical not included.

No, just errors in the description in the system. Assume that he's actually selling a T23 (as the title indicates and MOST of the system description supports). Multiple instances of the same error is counted as one. The seven you found are probably the same ones I pointed out to him in the message. As I was typing my earlier post, I saw two more buried in the text. Not as obvious, but errors nevertheless.

Harry,

You found two more that I didn't see: the Pentium M/Centrino and the docks. For some reason I can't get the thumbnails to enlarge. The large picture of the dock is the one which handles the T4x as well as the T2x (Port Replicator II; got a couple), whereas the smaller pics seems to have the older 02K8668. Good eyes!

Click the supersize button in the pic in the upper left hand corner of the auction. That will bring up a box where you can scroll through all of the pics full size. I think the pics of the Thinkpad are very dark on purpose :).

Bluetooth = lie, unless it's by Cardbus
Wifi G is a lie, unless he installed antennas (which is hard to do in a T23, trust me)

All other lies have been mentioned. Just contact eBay and get this seller banned from the site as well as remove these blatant lies

Indeed, the description says "1 Phillips Bluetooth PC Card".

Anyway, the original description for the 2648-RU1 is:

This just in... (well it probably got to me a little bit ago but I just signed onto eBay a few minutes ago):
eBay seller wrote:You are right, this is my first time selling the T23 models, I couldn't much info on it so I use the info from my previous listing from a T42 thinking they were very similar. Ebay wont let me revise the listing since there's bid on it already. I'll make this changes on the next listing since I have more of these, thanks for the info
I'll put up my list in a little while; I'm in the middle of a PM...

Okay, here's my original nine "Waldos":

This is all based upon the model 2648-RU1 which pianowizard has already posted the specs of

1) Pictures show an obvious T4x, not a T23
2) References to DDR memory, not SDR
3) Maximum supported RAM is stated as 2048MB, not 1024MB
4) Installed cache memory is also wrong at 2048KB
5) USB 2.0
6) DVI out (yes, port is on the replicator but T23 does not support it)
7) Gigabit ethernet
8) Integrated wireless LAN was not offered with the RU1
9) and this one is a little iffy... Windows XP Pro; the RU1 has a W2K COA

I did mention to the seller that the T23 did not come with the Ultranav as part of the explanation about the picture showing a T4x, so I sort of pointed that out.

All the pictures of the inside of the laptop or the laptop turned on show a T4x. There are a couple of pictures of a closed T23 from the outside. I smell a DOA/cracked LCD scam in progress.

I had the numerous references to Lenovo because of the simple fact that the T23 was manufactured long before Lenovo came into the picture. Plus there's the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem 2.0, which according to this Thinkwiki page came in with the T4x and not the T23 (which I only just came across after re-reading it).

Honestly!!! That's pretty bad! That guy needs to do some serious research on TP's before putting up a completely false description.

He's either pretty dim or a scammer. Today the listing says "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing."

I'd vote for the first option (he's probably "Inspector Dim, of the Yard"). I don't get the feeling that he's intentionally trying to deceive; just that he's lazy and assuming stuff about Thinkpads. At least he pulled his auctions. Not quite as bad as this one that I'm still trying to straighten out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0226744508

What's wrong with that one? :) The lady that I talked to the other day insisted that her "techs" go through each system and make sure everything is listed correctly. I asked for the TYPE numbers for the X22 and X21 systems they have/had listed but she said that they would have to track down each one and that she couldn't do it right away (if at all, I felt). I emailed her a copy of the tawbook and she said that she would pass it along so who knows, maybe next week I'll get an answer....

Dim is an understatement.

I have no idea :??: how this guy runs a business.

That was sad.

This guy honestly needs help! :help:

I heard this on the 6 o' clock news tonight: "In local news, the whole ebay community got together today to hold a Thank You ceremony for Mr. Ray Kawakami. Mr. Kawakami is a local computer tech who has recently helped saved the ebay community from fraudulent sellers. We thank him."

Good luck sorting them out!
