The Battery, Is She Dead?

#1 Post by Miller88 » Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:54 am

I was using it last night and it pulled the shutting off trick on me. Now I get a battery light flashing and it says that an error has occured and the battery cannot charge and needs to be replaced.

I can run off of the battery, right now at 90% but if plugged in, it won't charge and the orange battery light is flashing.

This is not handy as I need the laptop for a class in a room that has now outlets.

I'm probably going to get a 9 cell generic battery from ebay.

And looks like my Dell is going to be my laptop now and this is going to do desktop duty :(

well as you said, get the other battery and you are back in business. You can find batteries on the marketplace here for your TP and OEM ones at that too. Don't have to worry about your system blowing up. The money spent on a new dell would more than tripple the cost of a battery so yeah..

There, they still have nice 6 cell which should give you 3hrs 24mins in my tests :) Normal surfing and email and all that.

So the batt is toast?

I already have the dell laptop but it's too big to carry around.

I'll most likely end up buying the 9 cell as I'm going to be on the road a lot this summer (hopefully) and might need the extra battery life.

well i didn't figure that... umm maybe you could try charging it while the system is off. Take out the battery and ac adapter, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and then put it all back together and try then. If not, leave it turned off and plugged in and see what happens in the morning.

What does it say in Power Manager? That should give you some battery status.

"A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replaced the battery"

I'll play around with it to see if I can get it working again.

well how long have you had it? Lenovo will replace it even if it's up to 6 months out of the standard 1 year warranty. There is a link above or in the faq that gives you a link to the site to check and all that. My battery is working great still even tho i've lost maybe 10whrs in 1yr :)

I'll see if i can find the link:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 709#203709

there is another one too... i gotta search for that one tho

I don't qualify for the replacement. Apparently they go by when the laptop was bought, not when the laptop was put in service.

I just purchased a 9 cell battery. So going to pull apart my old one since it is no good.

I just recently had the same issues with the 6 cell battery on my T60 (2634 D4U), all of a sudden got the orange blinking battery light and the message "battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery."

This seems to be an increasingly common issue with these batteries...

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ht=battery

... and when I run the battery verification tool for the replacement program on this site: (not recall)

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 67765.html

it tells me it doesn't qualify. Very frustrating, almost seems like Lenovo knows these batteries have issues but aren't including them in the recalls.

well if you just bought the battery it does come with a 1 year warranty on it's own so even if you got it seperately from the laptop you still should have some time. Unless that 1yr has already passed.

Irreperable Damage

That is what mine says and is blinking orange, what is the best place to purchase a replacement, Lenovo? I have the 6 cell but was going to go for the 9 this time. Have had this 2007 T60 unit for 2 years now. Also can you carry the battery seperately from the laptop and does it stay charged, because I have a case for the TP that only will take it if it has a 6 cell? Thanks.[/list]

Make sure that you test your battery with both links qouted above.

I had two batteries with the same error that I received replacements for using this specific link (the last one of those mentioned above):

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67765

The application links to a Lenovo site where they might have updated the recall to include your barcode.

Thanks a lot! My battery is showing the error. Fortunately mine is eligible for the replacement.

Two problems with batteries from unknown sources:
Many of them are outright counterfeit, lower capacity than rating, or other problems. Counterfeit LiOn batteries are big business.
And many of them are from sources with poor quality control--which leads to spontaneous FIRES with LiOn batteries. Many of those have been documented, some with prime vendors (including SONY) many more with "generic" soources.

By all means look for discounts--but look at their reputation carefully. A notebook, cell phone, etc., that simply catches fire in the night while you are sleeping can be a killer.
