Is there a GOOD application that will actually SYNC files

#1 Post by nikemen » Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:47 pm

I am looking for something that will SYNC files between TWO computers, either via internet or LAN? I have tried the MSFT Foldershare product, but it doesn't actually SYNC?

It will simply replicate files to another share if it finds duplicates, or same file but with different last modified dates? I would really like to be able to replace OLDEST with LAST MODIFIED file

Check into PowerDeskPro from http://www.v-com.com/product/PowerDesk_Pro_Home.html

Includes a.o.:
Sync Manager - Compare and synchronize the contents of two folders. This is especially useful for those who work on files that are shared between two computers, but it is also useful for backing up files, and many other uses.

I couldn't live without that program! :thumbs-UP:

I'll checkout these items.

Anyone here know why the Vista file compare, merge, copy doesn't show the TIME details and DATA details of two files that one is comparing.

For example, if I MOVE one file to a folder with the SAME file in there, it says to I want to replace, copy or stop, but doesn't show me enough information to make a decision.

Is there a setting somewhere to update this?

Depending on your need, the built-in Briefcase replicates and synchronizes files on two computers or on computer and server very nicely. I have been using it for years with very few problems. I depend on this for document backup.

Total Commander does a very nice job as well, but is much more manual. I used it for my application file storage because it fits my needs there. Not free, but not expensive either.

I use "Allway Sync". Small footprint, does an excellent job. SyncToy fubared my backup once and I stay away from it.

I'm just now installing Microsofts free "Foldershare" to see how it works.

I think the web address is just foldershare.com.

It's in beta. It installed superfast on my old computers. I'm also using Microsofts OfficeLive Workspace system as another way to keep all my Office documents available online. I'm truly enjoying it.

Pretty soon, we'll have all the functionality of Apple's .Mac without spending $100 a year on it.

I've used FS since it was a private product, maybe four years ago. It was bought by MSFT about two years ago I think.

the issue is, it doesn't really SYNC, in that if I have two folders that I want synced and say change ONE document in ONE of the folders, I want the OTHER folder to get the NEW document, or sync up with JUST the new document. What I get is Document A in Folder A, and Document A in Folder A on computer A, so I get copies of both.

The same is true for sync toy, although it DOES do some level of true file level syncing.

I've been using SyncToy for 3 years now to do an N-way sync between multiple computers and a few shared network folders and it's been flawless. I can change a file on one PC and the changed file propagates correctly to all other PCs.

Another vote for Microsoft SyncToy. Take a look at version 2.0 (beta) which allows to schedule sync in the background when your computer is idle.

I use Gyula's Navigator for all file handling. It's like the old Norton Commander, mostly: split screen for two directories and key shortcuts to copy or move files from one to the other. If you copy a whole directory, the first time it encounters a file with the same name in the target directory it asks you if you want to overwrite it. You can then choose to replace older with newer versions, and apply that to all files. Result: it will renew older files on the target drive or directory, and leave the rest alone. I use it to backup my data to an external harddisk.
I know this is not synchronization per se, as it does not delete files on the target drive that are not present on the source; but then I store a lot of stuff that I don't immediately need on my external USB HD, so the directories there tend to have more in them than the same ones on my Thinkpad. I would not want to lose those files.
GN also allows you to open files, unzip zips, view files, rename them, etc. Any file operation. I like it a lot better than dragging files with the mouse.
