New HDD for my T30
Greetings,
It's my first post here
and I didn't want to create a new thread. I've bought T30 in 2007 winter and I'm very fond of it. But I want to update it's HDD, 'cause 20GB aren't enough for me now
. I have read a lot of posts in this forum and I was looking around in my local on-line shops but I still don't know what HDDs suit T30. So, I was wondering if someone could look here:
http://www.gerakaina.lt/new/visi.php?cat_id=142, or here:
http://www.fortakas.lt/index.php?sid=fe ... t&cnid=252
and tell me, what suits my laptop. I'm looking for something around 160GB.
Thank you in advance!
Cheers,
Martin

Momentus 5400.3
Model: ST9160821A
Description: HDD Mobile 160GB SEAGATE Momentus 5400.3, 5400rpm, 8MB cache, Ultra ATA-100, 2.5"
?
I found something out there, with a bit less GB:

Will it fit?

ANY 9.5mm high, 2.5" laptop hard disk will work in your T30,
as long as the interface is called ATA, ATA-66, ATA-100, IDE, EIDE or PATA.
If it is SATA with an S it will NOT work.

In theory, any drive should work. However, there are two considerations:
1) It gets very hot in that corner of the laptop, and too much heat in that area will lead to failure of one, then both, RAM slots. Read the reviews of the drives you're considering and pay special attention to heat output. I had to change a drive in one T30 I have because it was running too hot.
2) Make sure your drive is in the supported list otherwise you'll have the pesky Error 2010.

You seem to state this as fact, so I feel obligated to point out that 'heat' would be a difficult thing to prove as the cause for the T30 slot failure. It could just as easily be explained by board flexing, bad design, manufacturing defect, or improper solder used to begin with. It seems to me that any systemboard should be designed to accept heat because hot components are all over it. A CPU or GPU gets much hotter than a hard drive, as an example. If constant heating/cooling was a huge factor in systemboard failure, CPU's would be coming loose all the time. I've never seen it happen. I am not saying it is not possible, but it certainly is not a frequent occurrence. T4X Thinkpads had a loose GPU issue, but that was never tied to heat either...board flexing. My personal opinion on the T30 slot failure was poor manufacturing technique used to solder the slots to the board or bad solder or both. This combined with the fact that the slots are under constant stress from the spring loaded RAM holders led to failure in some (not all) T30's. It's also entirely possible that the design of the board itself at the contact points was so bad that cryptonite couldn't hold the slot to the board.Maccess wrote:1) It gets very hot in that corner of the laptop, and too much heat in that area will lead to failure of one, then both, RAM slots. .
