HARDDRIVE MAKING NOISES

#1 Post by TheLaughingMan » Sat Mar 08, 2008 11:40 am

My Hdd, which is a seagate momentus 200gb 7200rpm is making these high frequency noises lately, i had it for like 1-2 months and it just started making these high pitch sounds lately. What can I do about it?

Hey,

I don't think their is any fix for that, if it is covered under a warranty you can try to exchange it for a new one.

I would suggest trying it in another machine, or through an SATA/USB adapter or in an external case first just to be sure.

Almost sounds like Head Damage 4. Do you think this kind of thing would cause my notebook to freeze.

If you have any noise close to those at that site, call the manufacturer and get a new drive. Yes, a defective hard drive could definitely cause system freezes. Run a diagnostic on the drive from the manufacturers website.

Weird, I pass all the diagnose test from the software Seagate provided on there site, and the noise disappeared (test must of somehow fixed it :). If the noise comes back I'm just going to exchange it, hopefully they don't give me a refurbish.
