Survey on LCD defect frequency. Please post your data

#1 Post by Thinker » Sat Dec 04, 2004 11:46 am

Hi,

I'm getting a Thinkpad soon, and I have heard plenty of horror stories about LCDs with bad pixels, even after several orders.
I have the theory that some models are more prone to have these type of defects, and I think some type of survey would be helpful to me and other prospective buyers of a new Thinkpad.

Don't simply post data for Thinkpads that you have had that exhibited some LCD defects, but feel free to post your data when your LCD has been free of defects! This will offset the potential problem that models that simply have sold more units (but are not necessarily worse in terms of LCD problems statistically) show on top of the list.

Please, include your data in this format:

____________________
Thinkpad Model

Type of LCD defect
____________________

Of course, if you have had several thinkpads with defects, include all of them.

Thanks.

Historical error rate is no guarantee to what you will get. I wish not to be mean, but this survey is a waste of time for its intended purpose. You will get what you get when you buy your TP. ... JDHurst

Ok, thanks for pointing this out. I was naive enough that I believed I could increase my chances of getting a perfect LCD by using some sort of strategy. I guess there's no such thing as strategy when you buy a new laptop of any kind.

To the admin: Sorry for wasting your time. Feel free to abort the topic, or let it die a slow death.

If you are buying direct from IBM no worries, if it has any display anomaly send it back.

Yes, I am aware of that, and this makes me feel much more at ease.
However, I wouldn't look forward to going through three or four cycles of:
1.Paying for shipping
2.Picking up Thinkpad
3.Finding LCD defect
4.Requesting a return authorization from IBM
5.Shipping unit back to IBM (and paying for return shipping)

In the end, I am sure this is way better than the fate that mortals suffer when they order from Dell only to find an ugly pixel in their screen.

Looking forward to go through the above hassle (up to a couple loops) if that's all it takes to have a perfect T42 in my hands.

you must remember that people on this forum are more likely to leave a post if something has gone wrong with their tp, wont you will not hear are all of the success stories! I ordered my tp and there is NOTHING wrong with it - no dead pixels etc, and i am not just lucky, everyone i know with a tp has had absolutely no defects at all. Just calm down, order your tp and take things one step at a time - by setting yourself by saying "im looking forward to going throught the cycle", you are just gonna be miserable and im afraid no forum in the world could help you with that. :)

Hehe. You're right, Simon. I shouldn't be thinking it's going to rain when it's probably going to be a bright, perfect and sunny day in ThinkPadland.
By the way, I am interested in ordering something with the same specs that you list in your signature. Dothan 725, Radeon 7500, etc. Is your model a 14' 1024x768? What model is it exactly, if you don't mind sharing?
And I assume you bought it with 512 Mb and then bought another 512 Mb stick from another vendor? Crucial memory, or which one?

Thanks!

bad LCD defects seem to come in batches. A friend of mine had to return 7 Thinkpads before he got the perfect one. This was 2-3 months ago.

I on the other hand received a perfect one right away. (Late November).

go figure.

hey thinker - i have the 14 inch 1024x768 xga. The screen is evenly bright and crisp and the colour is great. The 7500 ATI is perfect unless you intend to play loads of games like quake, or use graphic intensive software etc. Yes, it came with 512mb ram and i upgraded by buying another stick from crucial.com. I can recommend my model to anyone, my only problem with it was at the beginning when the fan was too loud and it ran too hot but i got around this by switching the settings to 'adaptive' when on AC and now my TP is silent all the time with no performance loss at all! Hope this helps and good luck with your adventures!

Thanks Simon,

Yes, that's the setup that I want. No need to get the 15' screen or higher resolution. Same with the card, when I want to play games I use my desktop, no need to wear out a new ThinkPad with such trivial tasks.

I am ordering within 3 days, and will take advantage of the free expedited shipping. Hopefully the screen will be nice like the one you describe.

You wouldn't need to pay for shipping or leave your house anyway. I'm on my 3rd T42, and it's perfect. The first one they shipped, and picked up free of charge. The second one they shipped and picked up free of charge. The third one is awesome.

It sucks, but at least you don't have to pay for everything.
