What replacement hard drive for my Thinkpad T21?

#1 Post by dejola » Mon Mar 10, 2008 8:13 am

I need a new hard drive for my TP T21 and have no clue what ones are available for it. I saw one for sale on Craigslist, brand new, for $80. It was a Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 SATA drive. Will SATA (a rather new development as I understand it) work with the T21, an older Thinkpad? The fellow who is selling this drive says he used it in his Playstation 3 but has upgraded to a larger drive.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

John

SATA drives won't work. You need ATA also known as PATA drives. Most laptop hard drives are 9.5 mm in thickness but some older (i.e. cheaper) ones are 12.5 mm. The T21 can use either thickness.

My favorite source of laptop hard drives is newegg.com . Go to their Power Search page and select the "ATA-6" option.

Any 2.5" drive will fit as long as it is ATA or IDE, thick or thin will do.
