So I Might Buy an X40...
I've been looking for something small and cheap to carry as a second personal machine, I had looked at the X60 (and of course the X300) but really don't want to spend a lot. I have read up a little on the specs, it has USB, the size is right, I can live with XGA and the limitation ont he 1.8" drive but I wanted to get a feel for how capable people feel the X40 is.
The majority of my use will be browsing and email which I'm sure it'll be fine for, I'd also like to do some Phostshop work - nothing major, do you think it'll be up to it?
Any comments or advice would be most welcome including what you'd expect to pay for an X40 in decent condition.
Chris.

I think it's a good choice. X40/41 are light and small and have solid build quality unlike some other certain models. I have a X41 tablet w/ 2gb+512mb memory configuration and it's more than enough for web browsing and email tasks. Photoshop does require some juice (memory and hard drive speed) but if you only use it for web editing or light imaging tasks I don't think the hard drive speed is going to be too much of a problem.

I'm using x40. I also have a T61.
x40 is fast enough. For photoshop, it really depends on big the images you are working with. You can always add more RAM. I would prefer an x41 instead because you can upgrade an x41 to 2.5 GB while an x40 can only be upgraded to 1.5 GB. Also x41 has a little more powerful processor.

I bought mine here for $325. I think they have only 3 left.

This one is a 1.4 GHz processor but $20 more.

Great advice, thanks to all of you. Oh well, so I bought an X40 (from a friend), got a good deal, now I need to sort out what memory to buy. I'm told it has 512mb so I assume that is 256 on the board and 256 in the slot so I figure I need to order a 1Gb SIMM, correct? Any of you willing to save me the digging and tell me what spec memory I need to get?
Chris.

i bought the exact RAM pianowizard suggested a month or so ago and it works great. i have 1.5 gigs (max) on my x40 and love the machine. i have a fully built x61s and a t60 that see much less use than the x40 simply because i like that the x40 doesn't get warm at all and is whisper silent comparatively speaking.
i use photoshop cs2 to edit entire batches of large image files (6+mb each) taken from a canon dslr all the time and it handles them very well. it's not by any means blazing fast, but the machine doesn't choke at all. with the 4cell, the x40 weighs under 3lbs, so i leave my EVDO card in the slot and the laptop goes everywhere with me. you'll like yours =]
