Hard Drive Cloning

#1 Post by geo123 » Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:32 pm

Hi

I have a R50-1836

I did a search and could not find anything. so...

I bought a WD 160gb 5400 harddrive to upgrade my 40gb HD and after cloning, I get the dashline on the upper left hand corner flashing forever using Acronis 11. I cloned from internal to external. did i do something wrong in the process??

Also my HD says 33gb and i cant figure out how to clone the IBM stuff to the new harddrive too. So any advice would be appreciated.

Tks

I am not sure if that model can use that drive, you may need to upgrade the bios. Acronis is a great cloning tool and will definately work on a machine that is set up properly. Check this thread out
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=27721

I vaguely remember a while back having the 33gb issue and it seems like it was related to the bios.

As has been reported here in some other threads, you may need to put the new drive in the ThinkPad and clone from external to internal in order for it to work.

Check disk mgmt and see what is showing there if you are cloning the recovery partition it will not show on the C: drive you should see another fat32 partition with around 3 or 4 gigs that is the recovery partition. Windows restore also takes up some hard drive space that won't be accounted for in disk mgmt.

I checked disk management, and i see disk 0 at 33.86, with windows restore at 1%(200mb) .

I dont see the fat32 partition.

How to cloning the recovery partition?
Cant figure it out.

Cuz in Acronis, it only shows 33.86 and not 40, and i will only clone 33.86. Am i missing something? some kind of setting or preference?

Also can it boot with out the recovery partition?

Did you go into the BIOS and set the predesktop area to disabled? That allows it to be seen.

I disabled the predesktop area in the BIOS and still says 33.8

now, I see 3.39 gb in diskmanagement, unallocated.

After, i cloned its says, "read disk error"

Whats happening??

Before I return it this weekend. it frustrating :banghead:

Possible cause if the drive was sold as "used": a previous owner/user of the disk drive noticed that there was a problem near the "end" of the drive and simply allocated it out of use. I've done that before back in the days of drives being measured in MB, not GB.

I successfully replaced a failing drive in an a22 using apricorn drive wire w/ ez gig II
it was fast and easy both the ibm service partition and ibm preload were copied it comes with everything you need I got it at fry's for 29.95 windows xp will not report anything more than 130 gb until you apply the windows patch the unallocated space may be where your service partition should be.do you have a160gb drive as you first stated or 60gb I use acronis 10.0 on my desktop and find it can be difficult cloning and reading multiple partitions on drives. if I can be
of any help let me know mike sfv
