Anyone ever have an insurance claim with the US Post Office?

#1 Post by phool@round » Thu Mar 13, 2008 4:46 pm

I recently had one of my babies damaged by USPS and I've never filed a claim. I didn't pay for extra insurance but I can't find the basic coverage dollar amount anywhere on the their site. I think it's either $100 or $150. Anyone have any tips for me. The individual that received it doesn't feel comfortable with taking it apart, so it will end up back in my ever-loving capable hands.

I'm just trying to help the person who bought the laptop with figuring it all out while doing the same for myself.

Thanks for any info, help.

Looks like unless it was shipped Express, then there's no automatic coverage:

Yep, Ray is correct. There is NO coverage, unless it is specifically paid for...except for express shipping.

I apologise in advance for using this thread for my own purposes even though I believe any information regarding my questions would be valuable to other foreigners who buy laptops from US.

So, I have been wondering the same as the thread starter but concerning packages sent abroad by USPS. I am currently waiting for a laptop that was insured for it's full selling price. If something would happen during the shipping how should I go about filing an insurance claim? Does anyone have any experience with this? How do I even know who's responsible since the goods could have been damaged in my own country by the local postal delivery service.

Any input would be appreciated.

There is a basic Indemnity coverage for international shipping, even if uninsured.
This search for "indemnity" on the USPS website gives you more details.
