TP 600 cpu upgrade

I recently got a tp 600 p2 (mmc 1) 300mhz, 128mb ram, 4gb hdd, win 98se. I've upgraded the hdd to 20gb, win xp pro/sp2, and I just got a hold of a celeron (mmc 1) @466mhz, installed, it turns on but won't boot. I already updated the bios (before the instalation). Any ideas? I have search everywhere with no luck. Thanks for any help.

Some "select" 600's have the wrong chipset to accept the upgraded CPU.

I am in the same boat as you with an "un-upgradeable" 600E.

...Unless there's a trick I haven't learned yet.

It's not a trick...

The Celeron's won't work in the 600's...

Bill's right - Celerons don't work in 600s.

The only upgrades from an MMC-1 PII-300 are the PII-366 and PII-400, both in MMC-1.

I found my PII-400 on ebay - there's a couple of threads in here from about a year back that have the part numbers you'll need to look for to get the right thing.

PII will be something like this: PMF40002001AA...The 400 is the speed...So a similar number with 366 mean a 366mhz cpu..And so on...

Celeron will be something like: PMH40001001AA...The H and the first 1 are the Celeron ID...

Thank you all for such a quick responce. The celeron I got reads:
PMH46601001AA and it is mmc-1 form, so I guess I'm out of luck again. Anybody interested?

Just for future reference if you try to upgrade your 600 again 400mhz is the fastest PII MMC-1 you can get...But last I knew they were pretty expensive and probably not worth the expense to go from a 300mhz to 400mhz.. The speed increase you'll see wouldn't be worth the price..

If you want to speed things up the best thing you can do for the money is max out the RAM and put in a 7100 rpm HDD...But they're not cheap either...

You can always upgrade to a 600E systemboard, which is pretty cheap on eBay nowadays. The 600E can be configured to handle up to an 850MHz PIII CPU that is used in the 600X...though I believe that it will run at lower speeds without actually altering the CPU itself.

Also, stay away from the 2645-55x,A5x 600E models, because they don't seem to like the upgrade as much. I ran into issues with trying to use a 500MHz CPU in two of them. They even have their own BIOS upgrades separate from the other 600Es.

I thought that I would at the part numbers for the two different systemboards:

2645-55x,A5x = 10L1191
Other 600Es = 10L1270

Extra note: I think that I see the difference between the two. The 2645-55x,A5x models are listed as: [13.3" AGP Model]. And the others are listed as [13.3" 32MB AGP Model] Not sure if the 32MB references the 32MB onboard ram or not, but it makes sense.

My observations:

10L1191 shipped with a 300 MHz CPU with separate half speed 512 KB cache
10L1270 and 30L2726 usually shipped with a 366 MHz CPU with 256 KB on chip cache
10L1410 shipped with a 400MHz CPU with 256 KB on chip cache

Fitting 10L1191 with a 400 MHz CPU can result in unstable operation

Well, I did the PII-400 upgrade about a year ago, and I only paid about $38 for my processor on eBay, so I wouldn't call it expensive.

Did it significantly increase the speed of the machine? I dunno, but since I was planning on getting XP onto it (still do), and I already have 288MB ram and 7200rpm HDD, I figured it'd make some difference.

Hmmmmm... I thought the PII 400mhz CPU's were more expensive... It's been awhile since I upgraded a 600, maybe I'm thinking of 600x's and the 850mhz CPU's..

Maxing out the RAM and a 7200RPM HDD will do a lot of good...

These CPUs used to be REALLY expensive, since they are rather rare. Although on the other hand, they aren't anywhere near as expensive as an 850MHz CPU for the 600x.

I remember many of the MMC-1 PII-400s I saw on eBay seemed to come originally from Compaq/Gateway laptops. Probably the one I bought was as well, but I don't recall. I just remember the "autobidding" feature saved my bacon on the auction, because someone apparently tried to snipe me at the last moment. (frankly, I think I prefer "buy it now" to bidding)

These days, I'd wager that despite being rare, they're not in as much demand due to being so far off the state of the art (heck, Open Office won't run on slower than a PII-300 processor), and so are not commanding the absurd prices of even just a couple years ago.

Still, swapping out the module was stupid easy, and I was suprised that I didn't have any issues once I powered up. There was some discussion back about a year ago when I did this that while both on-die and off-die modules existed, the off-die generally didn't work. I got part number PMF40002001AA, which has the on-die cache. What did I find when I pulled out my OEM 300MHz module? Off-die, far as I can tell. Go figure.
