[Z61m] Any chance to use 4GB RAM?

#1 Post by Bro » Fri Mar 14, 2008 3:25 am

I have installed 2x2GB Kingmax memory.
BIOS says: 4096 MB
Windows xpp says: 3GB
Yes, I've read somewhere that limit is 3GB, but the fact that puzzles me is:
How it is possible that bios recognizes 4GB, but os only 3GB?

Any chance to make OS use all 4GB? Different OS,drivers, bios, anything?

Cheers,
Bro

You'll need a 64 bit OS like Vista 64 or XP 64 to be able to use all 4GB of memory.

I have a question, I have a Z61M Thinkpad, but it says I could only have 2048 of RAM. So is that a mistake?

Maybe you managed to work with 4gb?
Unfortunately, it didn't help me. Tried with XP x64 version, still shows 3GB of RAM.
I believe 945 chipset is the issue.
Honestly, I'm bit dissapointed because Lenovo avoided the fact that memory limitation is 3 GB.

Yes, if you subscribe on this great forum before buying thinkpad :)
This is my first Thinkpad, so I was not aware of that issue with this chipset...

Well, you can look at it this way, at least I would:

a) It is pretty messed up that Lenovo would have you believe that just because you can see the 4Gb RAM in BIOS the chipset can actually address it...but the RAM used in these machines is cheap enough that you're really not at great financial loss.

b) It may not be able to address 4Gb of RAM, but your machine is one great ThinkPad, let alone great first ThinkPad.

Enjoy.
