R40 Fan Replacement

#1 Post by vanaya » Fri Mar 14, 2008 9:29 pm

My fan has been problematic off and on for 6 months. I'm going to change it out today with another used one. I removed the original one and there is charred sediment. Is there a pad that goes between the fan and cpu or is it just paste?

Vic, I've never seen a thermal pad on any CPU in a Thinkpad...GPU yes, but not CPU. Just get some Arctic Silver 5 or good Thermal paste and you'll be good to go.

Can't see the pics at imageshack. If you can email them to me I'll take a look.

They were used in A20m with 500Mhz PIII and 550Mhz Celerons. The fan assembly is different. They have a gap to allow for the thickness of the rubber. Fan assemblies for A20m, A21m higher than 500/550Mhz use thermal grease and are different.

R40 may have model that use thermal rubber too.

I found a PIC of a new fan assembly and it does show thermal material on it ...

If that pad is thicker than say a sheet of paper Vic, you'll either have to find another thermal pad to replace it or buy a new fan. If it is very thin you might be able to make up the space with thermal paste ...

That's a good pic. There is a piece of something (maybe copper just like the heat pipes) about 7/8" of and inch square by .10 mm thick. On the pic its centered on the fan and held by square tape with a cut out just enough to hold the piece on.

It's not copper as it stuck to the fridge magnets. In the HMM there is nothing shown, to buy a new one.
Harry, On the 600e fans there is a pad instead of using paste. Like we say in Texas, What ya'll think?

Edit: Just found this page that mentions a foam rubber pad. Not sure if this is a general statement for all the parts or if it's just for this fan.

That copper/pad sounds a bit thick to not use a replacement of some sort Vic, just my opinion mind you. I'd try to find an online source for thermal pads, there should be many, search on Google for 'cpu thermal pad'. Pay attention to thickness and size.

The used fan has an indent that goes thru to the fan. So I think it does make contact. I'm going to use grease and montior temps with NHC for the whole day. If temps get to hot, protectant thermal shut down should keep me safe for the first time. I will call IBM tomorrow and see what they tell me about foam/rubber pad?!?
Will any R40's chime in with there idle and current temps? So I can have an idea where abouts I should be.

Thanks

Well after a day of monitoring my CPU temp is between 52c and 60c. At 60c the fan kicks in and after 20-25 sec. it brings the temp down to 52c. Fan stays off until it reaches 60c. The intervals vary as I surf and email, maybe 20 minutes. While I'm typing this its hovering at 55c.
Where are you other R40's? Clue me in on your temps.

I assume that you have a R40 with a Mobile Pentium 4? The R40s with the Pentium M run much cooler. I would expect that 50 ish degrees for a P4-M based R40 would be okay.

I have a P-M based R40 and it idles at around 35 degrees.

On the money! Mine is a 2896-GZU which has the P4-M 2.0GHz. I'm glad that 50 is good. I didn't get a chance to call IBM/Lenovo for the pad, but will do that in the am.

Thanks for the picture. I need to exchange the noisy fan of a R40 and wondered if it's possible to exchange the fan only -- and save a little money: the whole FRU P/N 46P3099 costs me ~50 EUR in Germany.

Looks as if it can get too difficult for me (drilling the rivets, don't know where to get the fan etc.).
