DC socket replacement
I tried searching for this but couldn't find anything relevant.
I need to replace the DC jack on my R40e. I have a replacement but I can't find any information on disassembling the unit. The service manual isn't any use.
BTW, what is the exact size of the DC connector? I thought it was the connector plug that was intermittent so I chopped it off and now cannot seem to find one that fits properly. Of course, it might be the intermittent socket that is causing the poor fit.
Further to the above, I've just found how to remove the system board in the manual. I'll try following the steps mentioned. I still need the plug dimensions.

Welcome to the Forum!!!
Which dimension is it that you need? I'm a little confused if it's the socket on the system board or the DC plug for the brick or both that you need? What happened to the plug you "chopped" off? Where did it go?

Thanks.
It's the plug dimensions I need. I threw the old one away, as I had one that seemed to fit. I saw a replacment socket on Ebay and it was mentioned that the pin was 2.5 mm. If that is correct I need the size of the outer ring. A friend of mine found one that seems to fit OK. It's unreliable because of the intermittent socket pin, of course, but is OK if I keep it pressed to the left and don't move the laptop.
I'll be removing the system board today and having a go at replacing the connector.

I'll give you a hint on why the center pin is the issue, it's the lug that's loose on the back of that pin, the one soldered to the board. It's a compression crimped fitting and over time it loosens up. I take a center punch and re-crimp it to the center post and then resolder it to the board because it's usually melted the solder from overheating due to high resistance.

So true, so true......I've had to set many a board aside because of that fact, lifted the trace right off the board it did. I think we're in good shape with the OP's though, it's still working when "pressed to the left and not moved".......lol. I think she's still afloat Captain.

I've just had the thing apart, the solder joint on the pin wasn't any good, so we resoldered it. It worked OK when I tested it with everything apart, but now I've put it back together it's unreliable again. The soldering iron we used wasn't much good, I'll take it into the lab where I'm working tomorrow and try a decent soldering station. I might take the old socket out and put the new one in, but it's a bit more work. At any rate, I can take the thing apart and put it together again quite quickly, now.
