Recovering factory settings failed : pb with MGR.DAT

#1 Post by gty » Sat Mar 15, 2008 5:40 am

Hi,

When I hit the "Access IBM" key during the reboot I can't access the IBM Menu. It says :
Starting DOS ...
Failed to open MGR.DAT
Rebooting ...

and then it starts in the normal windows XP way.

Anybody has an idea to fix it ? I would like to recover the factory settings, any other way to do it ?
(The predesktop area seems to be still there).
Thx for your help.

No.
I don't know how to do it without getting through the "Access IBM" menu.

go to start >all programs>access IBM>create recovery disks. If your HPA is corrupted it may not work but it's worth a try.

I don't see the "create recovery disks" option in the menu, here is what I got :
Access IBM
Access IBM Message center
Battery MaxMiser Wizard
Easy Eject Utility
IBM Access help
IBM Access Support
IBM Rapid Restore PC
Presentation Director
ThinkPad Configuration
ThinkPad Software Installer
UltraNav Wizard

Give the following solution a try:

How to reenable the F11 function (Product Recovery Program). (It works, I've personally tried it)

Or if you've a floppy drive then install the following instead:

Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette.

You may note that the above solutions will only work if the hidden partition is intact and healthy.

I made the diskette, launch the repair option, everything went fine but the Access IBM menu is still not available at reboot (failed to open MGR.DAT). The PC reboots normally to XP.
How can fix the MGR.DAT ?

After you ran the repair disk did you try your access IBM button from within windows? Also try turning off the machine for a few seconds then when booting up hit the F11. If neither of these work, check around in the MP for some recovery CD's for your model, save yourself some time.

It's solved !!

I've download the Rescue & Recovery file from the Lenovo site. I now have access to the Rescue & Revory program in the ThinkVantage file and also when rebooting the machine.
