x20 BSOD on XP install

#1 Post by ChugokuOtaku » Sat Mar 15, 2008 9:09 am

coworker bought a 2nd hand x20, and wants me to put XP Pro on it.
it didn't have a media slice, but did have an external USB1.1 CD-ROM. It also came with the PCMCIA to IDE adapter to hook it up with. I couldn't get it to boot with the latter, so I hooked it up with USB1.1 and tried the XP installation. Everything goes fine up to the point before it asks me whether I wanna install/repair/etc. Instead, I get BSOD. Gave up on that after trying about 3 times, so I booted up Win2k, and tried the upgrade to XP path. It goes through the upgrade prep, reboots, attempts to initalize the XP installation, and then it gives me the message "Setup cannot find a CD-ROM drive"

any ideas?

The following should work. While running Win 2K, copy all files on that Win XP CD to a folder (name it something like "XPsetup") on the X20 hard drive. Go to that folder and start XP setup from there so you won't need the CD drive again.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)

thanks, I got it to go through with the upgrade installation
except I hit another snag, after it finished installing windows, it rebooted, but now as soon as it hits the "loading XP" screen, it immediately reboots. The installation process went through fine now, so I don't know what could've gone wrong. Now the problem is, I no longer have the Win2k option to boot the laptop. Are there any other ways to reinstalling XP other than from a CD?

Edit: thinking back to my first problem, I'm wondering whether there's something wrong with that particular drive/enclosure that I'm using, or maybe something wrong with the USB controller? Is there any way to possibly determine, since if this is the former, I can try and locate another external USB optical drive.
