100Gb, 7200rpm ATA drive availability
100Gb, 7200rpm ATA drive availability
Anybody know of a source for the Hitachi 100gb, 7200rpm, ATA (not SATA) drive for my kids' T41 and T42? There's nothing at the usual places (newegg, ZipZoom, Amazon, Buy, etc). There are a couple at some places I've never heard of before, but I suspect if I order over the web, they won;'t have them in stock.

Yeah, I saw that too. It's up to abour $60 now with no buy it now. I probably wouldn't buy a drive from e-bay either.

I also have difficulties finding these drives (HTS721010G9AT00); if you go to Hitachi's site and select "Buy Online" then it is reported that "Availability = Unavailable"?! Seems like Hitachi is stopping to manufacture 2.5" 7200 rpm standard-ATA drives?
I Denmark, these drives are still available (although not in stock right now, but said to be in stock again in two weeks); the price is $130 (partly owing to the historically low USD). In the USA, I found this drive at Jaz Technologies as new with a three-year warranty and with a $115,- price tag. Other sellers (also new drives w/warranty) are Viewmicro at selling for $112,- or Etech4sale.com selling for for $99,- or Advanced PC also selling for $110,- just to name a few.
Best regards,
Johan

Maybe the 5k160 will be the better drive. Anybody know if this is a native PATA interface or is it SATA drive with a PATA bridge chip (the PATA drives typically coat about $10.00 more than the SATA)?

The 5k160's kinda old, a claimed 50MB/s speed that only turns out as 40MB/s in reality...
Look for the latest latest drives. Like the 160GB 5k320. It claims 70MB/s, once you subtract 10 you still get something that's 50% faster than the 5k160.
I'm using a Samsung HM160HC, which claims to be 82MB/s.
Compare this to the 7k100, which claims 60MB/s. It still as the advantage of lower latency though.

That would be nice
but the 5k329 is a SATA drive and won't work with the T40/1/2

Are there any issues using the Samsung HM160HC in a T41/T42? Does it achieve its speed by virtue of a single platter and high ariel density?

I don't know if it can be described as "an issue", but there is some discussion about "superclicks" etc. in the thread T41: Which HDD to buy? .. and Samsung HM160HC issues. Also, see the thread T41 & Western Digital 7200rpm HD and especially see the post by aaa of Fri Mar 07, 2008 3:30 am pointing to The largest single platter 2.5" HD?, 80GB/platter? where the HM160HC is claimed to be faster (?!) than a 7200 rpm drive. Could be i(vety!) nteresting to have forum.thinkpads.com user FTC to elaborate a bit on his experience with the HM160HC in a T42... are the "superclicks" e.g. disturbing in reality?sktn77a wrote:Are there any issues using the Samsung HM160HC in a T41/T42? Anybody with experience on actual user performance (speed, noise, heat, power consumption) of newer 5400 rpm HDD's compared to e.g. Hitachi's 7K60/7k100 HDD's please speak out... IS it true that 5400 rpm drives are preferred today over "older" Hitachi 7k drives?? All actual, user experience is very welcome! Thanks in advance..

Johan

Hi,
In my case and since I did set the advanced power management setting of the drive to 254 (max performance, i.e no spindown by the drive), my drive does not do any click at all... Even when it did, those were not disturbing for me. (not too loud). I was worried though about the number of start/stop counts reported by SMART, which is no longer increasing with APM set to 254.

The WD2500BEVE is looking pretty slick as well. See here:

And somebody linked HDTach results on the HM160HC here:

Yeah, the WD250BEVE is the best option IMHO. It might be slightly slower than 7k100 but 150GB make up for it. I benched 120GB BEVE against my 7k60:
Hitachi 7k60
WD 120 BEVE
The 250GB WD is out of stock here also, better get one now, only ultra-cheap, low performance replacement drives will be made in PATA from now on.

I agree. When the 60GB 7200rpm PATA drives of my R50p's get full (I still have close to 20GB left), I will replace them with this 250GB 5400rpm drive. By then, it will be very cheap, probably <$80US.Utwig wrote:Yeah, the WD250BEVE is the best option IMHO. It might be slightly slower than 7k100 but 150GB make up for it.

You still see new ones in the original packaging on E-Bay. I picked up a couple of the 100GB 7200 RPM PATA drives for about $75 each.
It is quite likely that HGST has stopped manufacturing this drive, which is a shame as it is one of the best choices for upgrading a T43.I also have difficulties finding these drives (HTS721010G9AT00); if you go to Hitachi's site and select "Buy Online" then it is reported that "Availability = Unavailable"?!
