As you can see, it's in French but it's a 7200 RPM 100G IDE hard drive.

Can I put that in my T40 ? Is it a good value ? My current HD is a 40G 5400RPM Hitachi one.

You can never go wrong with a Seagate IMHO, that's what I have in all of my "for keeps" Thinkpads, not including 701C... :D

This Seagate Momentus 7200.1 will work (fine!) in your ThinkPad (T40/T41/T42) and if you see the user feedback at Newegg for this drive, you may draw your own conclusion! I have one such drive in a T42p, and it has not given my any problems. The pricetag for the 100 GB Seagate (which comes with a 5-year warranty!) is quite good, in my opinion.

Note that 7200 rpm drives are (slightly) more noisy compared to 5400 rpm drives (see How big a harddisk can I put into my T40), so Google a bit around for "noise performance" of 5400 vs. 7200 rpm 2.5" PATA/ATA/IDE drives, if you wish to know more about that. Also, see the thread where this is discussed a bit: T41: Which HDD to buy? .. and Samsung HM160HC issues.

PS: If you are into upgrading your T40 at more points, see the thread New T40 owner, new upgrade race!!

Best regards,

Johan
