HDDs for T30 UltraBay2000
HDDs for T30 UltraBay2000
16March2008
Greetings.
I have joined and am now posting because
I have not been able to find answers anywhere else.
I have a T30 (2366) & the Ultrabay2000.
ThinkWiki says @
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay_2000_HDD_Adapter
"Takes any 9.5mm thick or 12.7mm thick, 2.5" HDD".
This "qualification" seems a little too expansive/inclusive.
I would like to source a HDD for the UB2000
over the internet, so I should not purchase
an incompatible HDD. Although I have three laptops
(only 1 Thinkpad), I am not knowledge about everything.
I have potentially found a 320gb & 500 gb HDDs
under 2.5" HDDs @ preis.de.
There are two Western Digital Caviar 320bg HDDs
(WD3200AAJB & WD3200AAKB). The specs are -
320.0 GB 8.9ms U-ATA/100 8.0 MB or 16.0 MB.
In any case I really have no idea what HDDs
are really compatible with the T30 & UB2000.
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

HDDs for T30 UltraBay2000
17March2008
Greetings.
Thanks for the reply.
I had to search the web see how one
differentiates between PATA & SATA.
I would like to confirm/clarify -
What ThinkWiki says IS actually too expansive;
i.e. / e.g., one cannot use a/ny 2.5" SATA HDD
in a T30 UB2000 ... correct?
One can use any 2.5" PATA, PATA = E/IDE & ATA
but PATA <> SATA ... correct?
Preis.de listed the WD Caviar drives under 2.5" HDDs,
but the HDDs are actually 3.5" HDDs, so I can forget them
and forget any 2.5" SATA HDDs ... correct?
A IT store clerk told me the largest 2.5" ATA HDDs are 250gb?
Is that industry knowledge or an inaccurate statement?
Two store clerks have told me the T30 cannot use
a 1gb RAM module, but this Forum is full of real life
cases of people using 1gb RAM modules in T30s.
I have a T30 with a non-functioning 2nd memory slot.
I hope the relevant recent posting in the Forum will allow me
to find someone who could/can resolve that problem.
Maybe I only need a repair shop to give me
a 15 minute appointment ...
Any insights appreciated.
Thank you.

I hope that I can answer all of your questions here. It is my understanding that the largest PATA 2.5" HD was about 250GB, as you just stated. I quickly browsed the part numbers that you have given for the other 2 drives, and they appeared to be ok, but now I see that they are 3.5" drives.
Yes, the T30 will only accept PATA, not SATA drives.
Yes, the T30 will also accept 1GB Ram modules, for a total of 2GB ram, assuming that the T30 doesn't have the dead Ram slot issue...which yours does.

The T30 can take 2 sticks of 1GB each, totaling 2GB.
If one slot does not work, you can still put in1 x 1GB.
There has been plenty written about these faulty memory slots, see here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=13262
and we are now so far, that those slots can be repaired, if you are handy with a soldering iron. Read the last page or 2 of that above post.
As to hard disks, it does NOT take any SATA disks.
But as mentioned before, ANY 2.5" PATA or IDE or EIDE or ATA-6 or ATA-100 hard disk (9.5mm or 12mm thick) will work in your T30.
Quite popular are the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 (100GB at 7200rpm) and 7K200 (200GB at 7200rpm).
Also look at the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 series.

Just a little detail
This is for RealBlackStuff. I see your tagline shows you've got a T30 maxed out to 2GB. Do you know what make of RAM chips you're using and if they are PC2100 or PC2700? Just curious because I've got a T30 that I want to do the same with and some various RAM options and there's nothing like a little real life experience to help clarify a situation.
Anybody else being able to share the same sort of information would be welcome to add their two bits. I've sniffed around some other threads and gleaned some bits and pieces, but every bit helps.
Thanks.

I'm using two 1GB sticks of generic Samsung RAM, PC2700.
All chips are made by Samsung, type: K4H510838C-TCB3.
On the sticker it only says:
1GG333 002EJC14&
0410

if you have an ultranav model with track pad then go for the 9.5mm HDD as it can also be used in place of your stock HDD if you ever have the need.
and get the ram slot fixed, don't try the folded paper trick like some have as that can make the problem worse than it already is. when looking at used T30s i saw one that had the solder pads of the front slot ripped off the board from doing this, no chance of repairing something like that. if you don't trust yourself to do the soldering then take it to any place that does electronic repair and they should have no problem doing it in a few minutes.
i have seen reference to a blue colored shock absorber that should also be removed but in my T30 2367-3U9 i didn't see such a part.

Greetings.
Just to update ...
I've asked around everywhere I go,
but I've still not yet found some one/where
to repair the dead memory slot.
I travel all the time in Europe, so I'd certainly welcome
hearing of any one/where who could/would fix the slot.
I bought a WD2500BEVE in early 2008 to replace
the 40gb that came with the T30.
Then a year ago I bought another WD2500BEVE for the UB2k.
I just bought a WD3200BEVE - new to the market -
for the UB2k and put one of the WD2500BEVEs
into my 11 year old multimedia machine and
am filling the 2500BEVE with avi files ...
It seems the PATA drives will go extinct,
so one might want to snap up those WDBEVEs 'for that ...
