Power button on dock not working.

#1 Post by MartinB » Mon Mar 17, 2008 5:12 am

I have a T23 and the port replicator II, http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45922 . When docked, the power button on the dock will not activate the T23. It works perfectly with a T42. Is this just a compatibility issue? Should I get the port replicator I instead?

Should not be a compatibility issue. The T23 I'm using at the moment is docked in the same type of port replicator (74P6733) and the power button does work. Since your T42 works properly (as do my T41s), I'd guess that there's a problem with the docking port connection(s) on the bottom of the T23 or with the motherboard. You can certainly get another dock (type I or II) and see if it powers up the T23 but be prepared to have an extra dock that also doesn't work with the T23. I haven't spent the time to try to reverse-engineer the connections for the power button on the dock and see where they go to the docking port connector, nor look on the T23 motherboard and see if there's something like a fuse which protects that part of the port. Something which would cost no money would be to get a close look at the docking port on the T23. If you see any broken, bent or missing pins, then that might provide a clue. Note: there are supposed to be some missing pins on the left side (A2 in this picture)

I've run T4x and T2x machines on a Type II port replicator, and find that it's often a problem to get them properly engaged in the docking connector Sometimes you have to eject them and try several times, pushing down firmly on the rear of the computer, to get every connection right.

Frankly, I prefer a Type I port replicator for the T2x series, since it's lighter and easier to handle. It's also cheaper. But both types work on the T2x series.
