I vote for Northern California!

Your thoughts?

California is too expensive and too crowded. Better to live in the MidWest where gas prices and the cost of living is cheaper and where there's plenty of room between you and your neighbors.

Northern CA used to be alright, lived in San Rafael and Healdsburg, but have to say North Carolina isn't all that bad. Never lived anywhere but those two places so that's the only reference.

Well, here in the heart of the Midwest, gas just dropped to 3.44 a gallon. We get every aspect of the seasons, (sometimes within 12 hours), 30*+ temp swings are not uncommn. Besides tidal waves and hurricanes, we've got the capability of every other natural disaster at our disposal. Property taxes are pretty low. But then everyone knows each others business also. Two minutes from home and your out in the boonies.

But we do have fiber optic to the house. :D :D

I really loved living in Avery County when I was much younger. Beautiful place.

Though the taxes are high, the government corrupt, our senator is out loligagging and NOT doing what she's paid to do, I'm voting for UPSTATE New York. You can have the city. Most of us UPSTATEr's would even pay you to take it.

I have travelled a fair bit, and if money were no object (it is, of course), the cities I would pick are:

Paris, London, Toronto, Victoria BC, Washington DC (good parts), and Old Town, San Diego CA.

Pick your Country/State locations from there. ... JDH

Well, I have only lived in California. But I have visited other places. I liked Kansas, Iowa was cool... but having grown up 3 miles from the ocean, I think I would not enjoy the Midwest winters! I visited North Carolina and would agree with Kyocera (it isn't all that bad). rkawakam does have point, California is expensive, but the wages are higher, so it is relative. Sonoma County also produces some of the best wines in the world (if you are into that kind of thing)

Wow RealBlackStuff according to that article you provided, the number 5 best place to live was Claremont, CA. When I read it, I remembered that I lived there from the age of 2-5. Talk about flashbacks. What synchronicity!

Agreed, 100%. I'd never move back to any of the city's five boroughs even if I had the money to spare...too bad that the corrupt politicians have let the beautiful upstate NY get the way it is, economically challenged to say the least.

As for the places outside of U.S. I'd agree with jdhurst on London (where I have lived) and Toronto (where I haven't), possibly Washington D.C., adding Barcelona and Limassol (Cyprus) to the mix. As gorgeous as Paris is, I don't speak French and that has always been a problem, at least in my modest experience.

And, of course, Belgrade, my hometown...once the newly elected "democratic" government disappears off the face of the Earth...

I lived in rural Vermont for 10 years and that gets my vote. Fewer than 600,000 people in the whole state, lovely countryside, generally slower pace of life. But you really have to like winter, because there's a lot of it, from October through late April; the rest of the year, as they say in New England, is poor sledding. It's the winters that drive people away who move there from softer climates, but that's a good thing as far as Vermonters are concerned. It's not paradise, there's crime and lots of severe poverty (70% of the popuation in the town where I lived for the first five years was on welfare), but it's definitely the best place I've ever lived.

I gave that list a shot until I saw the top 15, including 3 in my state. #15 is Horsham. I work 5 minutes from there, and actually used to work there. It's hectic, industrialized like a mofo, and that's about it. Big houses, sure, as that seems to be the criterion for making it the "best."

I grew up in Roswell, GA and would have to say it seemed like one of the better places to grow up.

Born, raised, and still live here in Northeastern Ohio. Great place to live.

NE Ohio is unlike the rest of the state. It has the highest concentration of people with 5 major cities all within 30-45 minutes of each other (Cleveland - 480,000 people, Akron - 220,000, Canton - 75,000, Lorain - 70,000, and Youngstown - 85,000.) The NE Ohio area has a population of well over 5 million. and is the 14th largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States. Ohio is also 7th in population in the United States. More than 37% of Fortune 500 businesses are present in NE Ohio. Playhouse Square Center is the second largest theater district in the United States.

It's funny how people talk about Ohio being completely FLAT. Sure, parts of it are flat (mostly west of Erie County), but a large part of the state is in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains. Cleveland and Akron have SPECTACULAR views and unbelievable outdoor recreation spots.

I live in a Cleveland Suburb, Amherst. We have top ranked schools here, VERY low crime, and houses range from 100k all the way up to 2.5 million. Politics are balanced, downtown is nice with a old town charm. A LOT of people underestimate Ohio, but NE Ohio is really where all the good stuff is at.

I second Washington, DC--spent the first 3 years of my post-college life there. Plan on moving back there this fall.

For those of you that don't mind living in a red state, Texas a great place (despite all the stereotypes that exist about Texans). Cost of living is very low, food is fantastic, lots of affordable housing, and there's no state income tax.

Texas is a "red" state, meaning predominantly Republican. One of the reasons why I chose not to live there. Idk if you were joking, but I explained it anyways.

No offense to anyone BTW. I have republican friends.

In case anyone was offended by my Texas comment, that wasn't my intent. Texas really is a great place to live--I lived there for 15 years and still proud to be a Texan....to the chagrin of many of my east coast friends.

I should qualify my statement about Texas: It can also be a great place to live for those who lean more towards the blue end of the spectrum (Austin, TX).

Haha, yes, I know what it means to be a red state. For God's sake, I wish PA was bathed in RED!

It was a semi-off color remark, but I'm not insulted. You were just trying to be funny.

I must add Wyoming to the list, especially the area around the Bighorn mountains. The Tetons are gorgeous, however it is way too expensive to live there.

I'm looking at Alabama after college, particularly the Huntsville area. I have some relatives down there and they say that the area is booming with jobs.

I figure, if the area is expanding now and the baby boomers will be retiring soon combined with less people going to college for IT, I should have a decent chance at getting a job.
