Speedstep on a A31p
I was wondering how to get the speedstep working on my a31p. Intel says the CPU is supported but I'm not sure how to enable it and my CPU is always at 1.7 Ghz. Any ideas?

First, you can check the setup in BIOS. Second, you can try the utility called Speedswitch XP, just Google for it, that's what I use on my machines.
Hope this helps.

I guess I didn't see that info at Intel. It was on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep . . ."For example, a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4M can run at 1.6 GHz, at 1.2 GHz, and at 786 MHz." Wiki can have accuracy issues though, I just figured that whoever wrote that had a 1.7 P4-M and tested it. Also could be a different motherboard.aaa wrote:1.2 seems normal for a P4. It's the newer Pentium M that goes down to 600.

You won't see that CPU going lower than 1200Mhz, at least I never have.

You're getting the correct reading, it's just not a common one.
My "main" machine idles at 1200 regardless of what I do, and shoots up to 2000 at a blink of an eye, no middle ground there. And most of the 2.0 machines that I've had XP on have behaved exactly like that to the best of my recollection. Then again, I always have everything set up to "maximum performance" in BIOS.
Yours being a 1.7 as opposed to 2.0 is most likely finally behaving the way it should.
Meanwhile, I've seen my daughter's old T23 idle at like 166...and her new T41 (1.6 Banias PM) idle at like 400 or so...go figure.
