You can find it here:

But I'm wondering, if some problems might show up. I read about problems with some hardware and drivers.

Ha i just found that a minute before you posted it.

I found the problem with my X61 is that I have the Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family with driver version 7.14.10.1329, which is within the span Microsoft says is a no-no for SP1. I have run the System Update and I do so a couple of times per week, so I have the latest driver from ThinkPad (I just checked the Lenovo Support site to confirm).
I guess there must be more people out there who have the same problem.
To fix the problem I tried finding an update for the driver, and found on the Intel web site that the newest driver is version 7.14.10.1437 - which is OK for SP1 according to Microsoft. But it won't install - "not allowed." Something in the special ThinkPad softwares is blocking an update.
Now, what can I do to get SP1 anyway? I'm pretty anxious to install this service pack. Any ideas? Or should I wait for an update of the driver from ThinkPad? Anybody knows when such is expected?
Thanks!
PS. If anyone's interested, the newest driver is available here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... bmit=Go%21

Let's just hope the folks at Lenovo who are responsible for validating drivers are up late tonight trying to get an acceptable driver ready for us. Though we may be a minority on this site, I'm sure there are many frustrated X3100 / 965 chipset people wondering when Lenovo will get the latest Intel driver to us so we can get SP1 from Windows Update.
alpineguy, I totally agree. But since SP1 has been out there for weeks for subscribers - and even longer for software producers - I doubt they are working very hard now. They should be aware of the problems since at least the turn of last year. So why is there no update?

Is anyone else not having this show up in Windows Update?
I'm aware you can install it from the standalone installer, but I'm curious why it's being blocked from my WU. Perhaps due to the driver issues listed above, thus microsoft blocking the update?

I have the same problem. I have installed all possible updates through windows update and all important updates through thinkvantage utility. Windows update tells me that my computer is up to date.
I'm running English 32bit Business edition on x61s (7666-3AG).
E: So based on what Bill said, SP1 should still install without problems. Bill, did you get SP1 through WU or did you do a stand alone installation? Has anyone with x3100 gotten SP through WU?
E2: Apparently also the fingerprint reader is not compatible with SP1 on all machines. I'm not at home currently, so i can't check which fingerprint driver my computer has, but some other people have had problems with t61:

The updated driver is not available through thinkvantage tools or windows update, so you have to get it from the manufacturer.

I've read somewhere that Microsoft stops SP1 for some of the drivers not because they are wrong, but because they are not properly installed (i.e., installed in the wrong way somehow). And since most people wouldn't be able to reinstall drivers manually, they've decided to stop SP1 for now - until they have a solution (which is supposed to be in mid-April).
But there's no info on this on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343, so it is really hard to tell if there's something wrong with the driver or if it it just needs to be reinstalled after installing SP1. Judging from Bill Bolton's comments, it might be the case that nothing is wrong with the driver AND that it hasn't been improperly installed. This is all very confusing, and since there is no word whatsoever from Lenovo on SP1 (they don't seem to mention the SP1 release at all) we've got no information to go on.
So I have no clue what to do. I've tried calling Lenovo before on a couple of issues, and it always takes a helluva lot of time and they're much interested in entering my mailing address into their system than in the questions I have.

I updated my fingerprint reader drivers to SP1 compatible. If you have the same reader (UPEK), you can get the new drivers form here: http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/d ... indows.asp
I didn't install the whole setup thing, just updated the driver in device manager.
Still SP1 doesn't show up in windows update, but it's probably due to the display drivers. However, it seems safe to try the stand alone installation, since many people have installed it and no problems have risen using the latest display driver from lenovo.
I do have to say though that it's very disappointing that Lenovo hasn't handled this any faster. God knows how long we have to wait for the new display driver
E: If you wanna play safe, it's possible to update the display driver to one provided by intel (even if it tells you it's not compatible), but then you lose the on screen display showing the screen brightness.

Hey all, I've been reading this forum for a while and I finally signed up last night. Got to learn a lot about my X61s through you all, so thanks!
I am also having problem installing SP1 on Vista Ultimate. As far as I know, I have all the relevant updates from WU, as well as from SU except . Microsoft lists 8 items that will prevent SP1 from installing, and one being the Intel display driver Igdkmd32.sys version between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 714.10.1403. I have 7.14.10.1329 (Lenovo distribution), so I cannot update it unless I roll back the driver.
Before I try rolling back my driver to a previous version I thought I'd get the forum's opinion first. Should I wait for Lenovo to get the drivers updated? So far my X61s is working fine since I got it back last week from Lenovo (7667-CTO purchased last Aug, 5 months of BSOD, all internal parts replaced, including going through 3 system boards, close to 8 weeks in the shop and came back a 7667-W18) and I am not sure if it a worthwhile risk to get SP1 on it.
Any advice? Thanks!

I would only apply this update to an "extra machine" I had laying around for testing purposes, not on my main daily driver. Or to an extra HD cloned with the current OS i was running just to see the result.dbshin wrote:Should I wait for Lenovo to get the drivers updated? So far my X61s is working fine
Let them get most of the driver issues worked out lest you be stuck with more trouble and it sounds like you've had way more that your fair share.

I updated my fingerprint reader driver and display driver from intel. After those updates SP1 showed up in WU. It seems to be working. I lost the screen brightness display, as expected, but since i can adjust the brightness normally, it's not really an issue. I will update back to lenovo driver when they get it finished.
Thanks for the reply! All I can say is, they don't make ThinkPads like they used to anymore. I've used the 600x and had two T-series (T30 and T41), and I don't recall those machines having any problems like the ones I'm having with the X61s. They rushed the X61s onto the market without proper testing. Turns out the batch had faulty memory and Turbo Memory had lots of conflicts with the system. I just hope that the Thinkpads don't suffer from poor quality control that's plaguing Chinese products these days.Kyocera wrote:I remember years ago when I got my brand new t42 I installed SP2 shortly after it came out. Then I started having video card issues that IBM tech support were probably related to me installing SP2. I knew it was not but still reloaded back to factory and still had the video issue, they wound up sending me a new machine. From reading your experiences thus far I'd stay away from SP1 just so they can't point a finger at that if something goes south after the install.

That's interesting. My first thought was actually that it might be the last point in Microsoft's 8-point list that was the problem: that Thinkpads have a third-party (Thinkpad) software controlling the settings of the OS. But since other people here were able to update their machines, I thought that couldn't be it. Also, clearly Lenovo must have known about such an issue and fixed it....right?i have Nvidia display and it won't update . so i'm not sure about your driver issue , who knows

My R61e with intel display driver 7.14.10.1329 of 09-13-2007 and my audio driver Conexant HD audio 4.18.0.0 of 04-27-07 with vista 32bit
operating system gives the same results reported, the vista sp1 is not showing as an available update.
I am going to wait on this one and use my Kanotix Linux for most of the things I do, I suspect there are lots of feet running fast on this one particularly if Intels updated driver does not work well with thinkpads. I suspect that DRM is messing with the drivers ability to function properly and that is what they are working to resolve, why else do drivers that "work" fail with the vista sp1 ? they are determinded to push this crap.
relax it will get resolved.

Its nice to be important, but more important to be nice.
I installed a clean SP1 when it first came out on a R61 and then loaded the latest drivers from the Lenovo site manually (but only if Vista didn't have built-ins).
It has been rock solid, despite at least 2 drivers (display + fingerprint) being on the list in the MS article.
I am guessing the problem must be specific to upgrading to SP1 rather than installing on a clean SP1.
Gotta say the battery life is better now, and drive appears to trash less. And my extended display stays on the correct monitor. Many little things make it better. Guess that's their aim.

So what would be the worst case scenario if I did the standalone upgrade of SP1 while still having the incompatible drivers?
-T42p 2374-D03 with Pentium M 765 2.1GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 7k60 HDD, IBM 802.11 a/b/g II wireless, 6-cell battery, and no touchpad

-W500 4061-CTO all stock

I'm currently downloading the standalone, since it won't appear in WU. (Thank heavens for resumable downloads) By the way, I have SoundMax HD audio, not AC '97.
Another thing, is I also have an optional update that I'm iffy on approving:
Do you think this is the holdup for me? Do you think the newest Intel driver is something to avoid until it pops up in System Update or on the driver page/matrix?

The reason being, that the last time I allowed WU to update it, there was an issue, and I had to go back to the latest Lenovo approved drivers which alleviated the problem.Windows Update wrote:Intel - Network - Intel(R) 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection

Looks like Lenovo is not going to immediately pop out a new validated driver for the x3100. Even though they must have known about this problem for some time, it looks like nothing is ready. Perhaps they will roll one out before MS releases SP1 via autoupdate next month.
While the workarounds that have been posted are possible and not that difficult, there must be a whole slew of folks with integrated graphics who just want to update to SP1 without jumping through hoops.
Lenovo's lack of rapid response to this long awaited OS upgrade is a bit disappointing.
