In either case, it seems there won't be a driver update for quite some time. They simply have no idea what is going on and they don't really care.
I called them today to inquire about this issue. They said it's the first time they heard about it. I asked them for the number to the software dev dept, and no one knows it. I've been passed around their phone system like a hot potato. Does anyone have direct contact info for their software/driver division?

Harryc,

It is only partially reassuring to read your "stay tuned" comment. I've been tuned to this station for some time now and am ready to listen to another channel! How long ago was SP1 released to manufacturers? How long has it been since Microsoft released SP1 to the rest of us? How long ago was it that Intel released an updated driver?

Wouldn't it be nice if Lenovo at least gave those of us with integrated graphics some idea of when or if a validated driver was going to be released?

I've been trying to be patient and waited for the driver to appear via official Lenovo channels rather than use the Intel version which has been out for some time. Unfortunately, I find myself becoming cranky as the days, weeks, and now months pass with no information from Lenovo.

Did your contacts say anything about a timeline?

I don't work for Lenovo. I am a volunteer here. I asked the question on behalf of the forum members here and was told it would be addressed. I don't have any other answers.

Ditto.

They could at least blog about this at Lenovo, or do a sticky thread on their forum. :(

Thanks Harryc for carrying this concern to Lenovo. Members of other forums have also taken that message to Lenovo.

Do you or anyone else have any idea if Lenovo is currently shipping new units with SP1 installed? If so, do you have any idea what drivers they might be shipping with X3100 graphics?

I appreciate the work you and the other Mods do for this forum.

The current driver works fine with SP1 on T61 and X61 ThinkPads.

Only Microsoft knows why their updater doesn't like it, but it appears to have nothing specific to do with ThinkPads!

just guess

Maybe Lenovo is waiting for windows vista sp1 to stabilize.
service pack might have problems within itself.
Lenovo might be waiting for that to be fixed before allow vista sp1 to be installed.
Think
about it.

I was able to install SP1 and the system boots much faster now and is much more peppy with day to day use (search is disabled). I didn't even update the fingerprint driver and all is still well. SP1 shows up fine.

However when I go to shutdown the screen flickers a few times... this normal or is this an issue related to the video drivers?

That would make sense if we all rented the computers from Lenovo under a license stating that they are responsible for and provides service for any software updates or installed software we might have on the computer. Since I bought my computer I really don't want Lenovo to decide whether I may install a legitimate update to the operating system.

Lenovo doesn't offer operating system service - they only take responsibility for the hardware and their ThinkVantage suite (and only limitedly so). I think they just messed up - they had no idea there were restrictions for the SP1 update and they didn't bother to check. They are clueless to what's going on.

This actually makes sense, it fits with my other experience with them. I've contacted them a number of times re: the driver issue and their response has been that they are "working on it." When someone else on this board calls them they say they have never heard it before. We're simply dealing with a company that is clueless; their internal information handling is obviously very, very bad.

It is Microsoft who is doing the deciding, not Lenovo.

As noted above, manual SP1 installs work fine with X3100 video on ThinkPads.

Absolutely, I agree with you that the decision on which drivers are "allowed" for the SP1 install is solely Microsoft's. But I was commenting on shiby's post that perhaps Lenovo doesn't consider the Vista SP1 stable enough to be installed on Lenovo computers and that's why they don't offer a validated driver. I wouldn't want Lenovo making such decisions for my computer, and I don't think they do (or could do).

New Driver!

#73 Post by bylund » Tue Apr 29, 2008 9:11 am

Guess what?! This morning when checking with Windows Update I had a new driver for the Intel 965 family available. The driver version, when installed, is 7.14.10.1437 which is not within Microsoft's "bad" interval of 7.14.10.1322 to 7.14.10.1403. (Lenovo's verified driver was 7.14.10.1329.)

I'm now checking if I can get Windows Update to realize the upgrade and thereby allow me to download and install Vista SP1. I've heard it might need to be refreshed a few times to understand the importance of the latest installs. So it may take a while for it to show up even though I have the latest driver installed.

Nevertheless, it seems there is now a new driver available for ThinkPads (mine is an X61). I ran Lenovo's System Update, but there are no updates available from it. The driver thus doesn't come from Lenovo, it comes from Microsoft!

I also got the 7.14.10.1437 driver, and Device Manager tells me the driver is from Intel. So I guess it's OK. :)

But no SP1 trough windows update yet. :?

Correction: I just got the SP1. It seems I had to wait for approximately five hours while checking for new updates some 6-7 times until a news Windows Defender update was downloaded and installed. After that I got an error - "Windows cannot search for updates" - twice while trying to check for updates, and upon restarting Windows Update I finally got SP1!

I'm downloading it now and having it installed. Finally! It's only been... what, 6 weeks?

It's good my T61 was slow to arrive then.

I had to update the fingerprint driver before WU gave me the SP1. I got this driver here:

http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/d ... indows.asp

After installing I did not have to restart :D and after a couple of rounds with refreshing the WU I got the SP1. Downloading now.

edit: SP1 installed on my R61, Vista Home Premium, X3100 without any problems.

I just got a T61 yesterday, and it had Vista Business SP1 pre-installed from the factory. It was built on 4/27, so they've been pre-installing it since at least then

Same here. SP1 was installed in about 70 minutes and it works wonderfully. It has solved literally all the annoying problems I had with Vista before: like having to restart a little now and then because the sleep mode "off" function seemed to take longer and longer the more times it was used - not anymore; and Outlook being loaded and downloading e-mails even though it has been shut down.

Highly recommended.

I don't use battery much, but I have noticed how the fan isn't as noisy anymore (not that it ever was, but it is more silent now than after the last BIOS upgrade) and the computer doesn't get as hot. I believe that would translate to somewhat longer battery time. But, as I said, I haven't tried.

Hard to say about battery time since my box was days old when I upgraded.

But I have not noticed any new problems since SP1. :D

After poking here & there, I noticed that my EXCEL keep getting crashed when exiting with the following message:

"Microsoft Office Excel has stopped working.
A problem caused the Program to stop working correctly."

I frantically started looking for solution(s) & guessed what, I found one at help.wugnet.com from someone called johnko99. Thanks a lot man.

His solution is:

Select "run" and type "regedit".
Click OK. The Registry Editor opens in a window.
In the registry editor locate the following:

H_KEY, LOCALMACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, OFFICE, EXCEL, ADDINS, BtOFFICEAddin.BtOFFICEIntegration.1

Under label "Name" there should be a line: "Lodbehavior". Now in the same line under "Type" there should be REG_DWORD" and under "Data" there should be "0x0000003 (3)" or something similar as far as the last digit is concerned (in this case 3). Behold, you are close to the solution... Change the last digit AND the one in brackets (in my case 3) to read 0! In my case under "Data" now reads "0x0000000 (0)". That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
Your Excel now is working perfectly!

Yup, that was a well-known issue with Excel 2007 and it´s not due to Vista SP1. Just remove the bluetooth addin in Excel (you can do it within Excel, no need to mess up with regedit). Everything should be fine then.

Cheers

Marin
