It fails to install for me, whether via WU or downloaded package. I ran SFC, and get reports of some file errors.

I'm looking at having to reinstall Vista, don't I? :(

I just SP1 onto my X61T from the website (not using Windows update), backed up before and after installation, and have yet to find any problems with it.

Well after playing with SP1 for a while now, I have never gotten as many BSODs before without it. It almost seems at least once a computing session with SP1 I get a BSOD, whereas before I never had any.
Anyone know the answer to the cause?

I would look for a cause outside of Vista. I have had SP1 running since inception (64-bit), and I have Vista Business 64-bit fully patched. I don't get any blue screens. I have other issues with Vista but reliability is not one of them. ... JDH

More information about the bluescreen could be helpful to suggest a solution. Did you download and upgrade the drivers for your computer as well? Maybe there some issues with your current drivers and SP1. Maybe start with the video driver.
I been using Vista with SP1 on a T61p for almost 2 months now without a single bluescreen.

By the way BSOD means that the computer does not start at all (that's what the death part refer to). Are you saying that the computer does not boot at all and your Windows really is dead? Or are you actually talking about a bluescreen without the death part?

Thanks for the responses guys.
I get a "blue screen" that says information about some "crash dump memory" or so, but than the computer automatically restarts fine.
I frequently upgrade drivers through windows update and system update, but I only apply the 'required' ones, and sometimes a few 'recommended' ones, other than that, I don't touch anything.
So unless I am missing an updated driver that those two programs are not picking up, I guess I will have to do some more checking of my system for the problem.
Thanks again for the help.

I forget the Vista location, but in XP, in My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced, you can tell the OS not to restart after a BSOD. That will give you time to copy down the error.

Now just to wait until it happens again....
And for those interested, with Vista: Right click my computer --> Properties --> Advanced System Settings --> Click 'Advanced tab' --> Third one down is 'startup and recovery' click settings --> Uncheck automatically restart

I only use the driver from Lenovo since i had some issues in the past using some drivers from windowsupdate.
Also sometimes systemupdate doesn't fint the latest drivers for some reason so you could check manually on the lenovo website to see if there is any new drivers. Maybe some more details from the bluescreen can give some info what is actually causing the bluescreen. It's hard to tell without any further info.

So it happened again while firefox was loading web pages (I think I remember it often happening this way).
Anyway, error message:

"BAD_POOL_CALLER"
Check recently installed hardware (I have none)
Than "Technical information: STOP:0x000000c2 (Cxpppppp7, 0x0000110B, 0x00000000, 0x0E85DF98 )
rdpdr.sys Address 0x8E85DF98 base at 0e80A000, Datestamp 47919273"

Any advice?

Look here:
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

It says:
0x000000C2: BAD_POOL_CALLER
(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.

There is more the above web site.

Well, back to SP1 problems,
Just recently been getting: "PAGE_FAULT_ERRORs" and than just got a "MEMORY_ERROR"
Both were blue screens and than a restart.

I am really thinking of uninstalling SP1 but I have used the sp1cln tool to remove the uninstall files...anyone know how to uninstall with those files gone?

After installing the usual updates via the Lenovo System Update last night, I finally got the much waited option to install SP1 for Vista x64 on Windows Update . It ran fine and I hope it fixes the random hanging once a month on my X61s .

So far, no problems yet.....
Feb 2008=Thinkpad X61s; 2x faster than X40 but not as asthetic.
Dec 2005=Thinkpad X40; perfect, but bigger than 240x.
Jan 2005=Thinkpad 240x; used; fast but dead pixels doomed it.
2003=Thinkpad 240; used,
1998=new Toshiba Tecra 740CDT. Pricey, heavy & last 5 year.

So after contemplating uninstalling SP1 over an over (i.e. previous posts), I figured I would give it one more shot.
SO I ran PC Doctor tests, and only 2 of 12 (or so) system memory tests actually passed....so could SP1/the new Thinkpad BIOS have problems with the additional 2Gb stick of Kingston ram I put into my machine (when I first got it, and was only running Vista 32, no SP1)???

Thanks for suggestions...

I went as far as a factory restore before I found the culprit.

For whatever reason, changing the SATA interface from AHCI to Compatibility mode fixed all my problems. Now I get no bluscreens, and SP1 installed without a hitch.

What I wonder about, is why that was an issue, when supposedly AHCI supports a better speed. :?

In the BIOS at boot. Hit F1 and browse through to Config, then change the SATA setting and save the settings and exit.

The thing is, I see some on the net complain that doing the opposite fixed their problem, but their setting was in Compatibility mode to begin with.

I believe the issue might be with what mode it's in when installing the matrix drivers, but I'm not feeling adventurous enough to find out for sure since I have it working now. ;)

Good luck.

Thanks so much!
I will adjust the settings now, and report back in a few to see the better results (hopefully)

So changed up to compatibility mode, and I am still getting the blue screens..although they are lesser in number. I believe I am still getting them related to 'ram errors'.
I have updated my BIOS, as of this past Friday, and am trying to keep my drivers updated.
So I do not know what to do next, whether I should switch some settings in device manager to see if that helps as well?
Any thoughts?

Thanks again,
