Cpu temp of T60 keeps raising continuously even when idle

#1 Post by bood » Tue Mar 18, 2008 11:39 pm

My T60 model is 1951BZ1 (Core Due T2400)

I read through most threads about temp issues here, but seems all different from mine. Actually I have two issues with my T60:

1. First as decribed in the title, when the system is quite idle(no big application running), once I turn off the cpu fan with tpfancontrol, cpu temp keeps continuously raising, about 1 degree (Celsiur) per 30 seconds. It can at lease reach 80...

see the logs of tpfancontrol here:
[2008-3-19 12:29:12] Smart: Set fan control to 0x00, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:30:12] Fan: 0x00 / Switch: 65癈 (65; 32; 34; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 37; 40; 51; 0; )
[2008-3-19 12:30:12] Smart: Set fan control to 0x01, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:31:37] Fan: 0x01 / Switch: 60癈 (60; 31; 33; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 36; 40; 50; 0; )
[2008-3-19 12:31:37] Smart: Set fan control to 0x00, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:32:32] Fan: 0x00 / Switch: 65癈 (65; 32; 34; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 36; 40; 51; 0; )
[2008-3-19 12:32:32] Smart: Set fan control to 0x01, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:33:47] Fan: 0x01 / Switch: 60癈 (60; 32; 34; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 36; 39; 49; 0; )
[2008-3-19 12:33:47] Smart: Set fan control to 0x00, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:34:47] Fan: 0x00 / Switch: 65癈 (65; 32; 34; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 36; 40; 51; 0; )
[2008-3-19 12:34:47] Smart: Set fan control to 0x01, Result: OK
[2008-3-19 12:36:12] Fan: 0x01 / Switch: 60癈 (60; 32; 34; 0; 28; 0; 26; 0; 36; 40; 50; 0; )
the system is quite idle, but the cpu temp always raise from 60 to 65, when activates the fan to 0x01 and cools down to 60 again, which shuts off the fan again. but if you turn off the fan, it can raise even higher.

2. Before using tpfancontrol, the fan runs at most 2800RPM even when the cpu temp is quite high (like 90), which I believe is the reason the system often shuts down automatically when I playing some large 3D games. It gets better when using tpfancontrol, the fan can reach around 3500RPM when playing. btw I've upgraded my BIOS to the newest version.

Anyone has the same situation here? Or any suggestions?

I'm running three T60s with TPFancontrol on all three. In Vista, they run around 5 deg. C warmer than in XP. In XP, 60 to 65 C is common at light load.

Under heavy load I can kick up to 75-78 C for short times.

You might try removing the keyboard, and then use a vacuum to clear out any dust and junk in the inlets and outlets. Make sure to GENTLY hold the fan so it will not spin crazily during procedure. Also blow out or suck out any dust from the fan. Gently!

Also, I raise the back of the computer about 1.5 inches using removable plastic feet held with velcro to improve circulation, reduce reflective heating off the desktop and improve the keyboard angle.

Just wondering what does the idle temp exactly mean? is it the stable temp when the fan is off, or the temp up and down like me with the fan on? For me, the temp never keeps stable if the fan is off.

I'm not really sure what is meant by "idle". I can only assume that the machine is doing minimal work (keep desktop on the screen, some disk utilities, etc).

With XP the machine is not going to be running as many services as will Vista. Temperatures will go up and down depending on what the machine is doing at any given time.

Here is how I have my .ini settings which determines fan speed on my T60s.

// Celsius: (IF Level FAN 0 < 80° -> Celsius is assumed)
Level=50 0
Level=60 0
Level=65 1
Level=73 6
Level=75 64

I have it set to ignore gpu temp.

With fan control progrom turned off, the fan runs more often and faster, as controlled by the ThinkPad's BIOS.

I use the TPFancontrol program to supress fan noise, but at the same time making sure the unit does not get too hot. I have never had a thermally induced shutdown with either T60, so cooling seems to be sufficient.

Well, I did not mean turn the program off, but turn the fan off, by manually setting the fan to 0 using the program. :wink:

Yes, idle means minimal work, coz we can't make sure the cpu's really idle, hehe

If the temp is rising that fast, I would think something is still running in the background. Or maybe it's not set to go to the lowest mhz when idle?

Wow, good point.

My setting of power management was N/A before. I use CPU-Z to monitor the CPU speed and it was always 1.8G. After I set the setting to "Video Playing", it's about 1G only when idle. And more, the cpu temp keeps staying at about 54C!

Thanks. And btw is speedstep tech can only adjust the freq to one lower freq? coz I only see 1G on my T60.

There should be a few other in between speeds. It just passes them quickly by default. Check out NHC if you want to force it to an in between speed.
