partitioning failed: file allocation table shifted!

#1 Post by nomo » Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:48 am

hi,

the following problem just happened to me:

i wanted to repartition a harddisk. It had a small primary partition that once was a system partition but was already formatted and empty. Behind this partition was another very big one where i had stored lots of data.

i then deleted the first partition and started the resizing progress for the second one. Just when the program had rewritten the file allocation table and was preparing to move the data, i got a bluescreen.

the file list is still intact, the data is still there, but the file pointers point to the wrong blocks of data on the hdd.

data restoration tools that i've tried don't work because they only look for deleted files.

even scandisk / checkdisk doesn't find an error and says that the files are fine.

what should i do? any ideas?

i was able to restore most of the data.

the name of the program that did the job is "Restorer2000".

This isn't meant as advertisement but as a help for those who might have a similar problem and stumble upon this thread.

I know that there are other tools that can do this kind of restoration but I don't know of any freeware tools.
