New to me, T40

#1 Post by popeye » Wed Mar 19, 2008 11:32 am

Just got my Re-Certified T40. Any hints on what to update first?
WinXP or IBM, also adding memory, 1GB. Wouldn't mind finding a floppy
drive for it if they're still available, don't think it comes with one.

Welcome to the forum!

I would try Lenovo first.

There will be many updates if this is a factory load.

Any USB floppy should work just fine.

Did the t40's come with an internal floppy drive?
What are your thoughts on upgrading the fan in this model?

T40 and any of T4x didn't come with floppy. You also can't fit floppy inside Ultrabay Slim. If you really need floppy you can buy any USB floppy. The A series came with floppy and optical drive. You may find floppy handy for some system reconstruction, testing work because it's sometimes easier to format floppy compared to burning bootable CD or

You can upgrade RAM to 2GB max and currently biggest 2.5 drive is the WD250BEVE 250GB 5400RPM. You can get DVD burner for Ultrabay Slim.

You can get 2nd hand docks for ~20 Euros and expand from the dock. The Thinkpad Dock II which is biggest and takes floppy in Ultrabay 2000 and comes with PCI slot has a fan and is loud. If you just need USB hub and DVI (not on all models) you're better served with Mini-Dock.

You also want to burn or obtain factory restore CDs. T4x series CDs are backwards compatible.

Fan unless it started grinding leave it as is. You will need to ebay correct fan, go download hardware maintenance manual and look up FRU number online.

No internal floppies for T4x series.

Depending on your CPU, and your intentions to upgrade it, you may want to put the long fan in.

If you currently have 1.5 or similar CPU, you can leave it as is. If you're planning on upgrading it to 1.8 or something like that, you'll benefit from a long fan tremendously.

Try to find a faster hard disk drive as well, you'll notice the difference. And a little extra RAM never hurt anyone... :D

Just my $0.02...
