WTB: T42p DVD drive replacement

#1 Post by Non-Thinker » Wed Mar 19, 2008 12:31 pm

I love my T42p and just upgraded/fixed a few things. Now the only problem is that the DVD drive is unreliable. Anybody have a new or near-new spare to sell? Anyway to enhance or upgrade the drive at the same time?

Please state if you are looking for a CD-RW/DVD-ROM or a CD-RW/DVD-RW?

In the former case, these are available from around $25 either in this Marketplace or at eBay (search for 13N6771 or 13N6769) - check e.g. this auction.

In the latter case, see the thread Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW.

Best regards,

Johan

^^^Thanks. I guess I must have a CD-RW/DVD-ROM now, but I'd be very pleased to upgrade to a CD and DVD R-W. I'll look at that thread.

Well, if you want to check what came with your original ThinkPad, do this:

Go to the IBM warranty lookup site, enter the model- and typenumber or your T42p (e.g. 2373-Q1U; it is printed on the label at the bottom), and then also insert the serial number (also printed on the label), then on the following page (the warranty status) select the link two-third down: "View parts lookup results for this system" and you will see the original IBM part number and the FRU number (field replacable unit) for your e.g. "CD-RW/DVD COMBO DRIVE FRU" That's how - and now you are already a specialist in this field!! :-)

Best regards,

Johan

^Thanks again, Johan. Indeed I am now an expert! My drive is 92P6110 CD-RW/DVD-RAM DRIVE FRU. I see in the other thread that you have the same and that if I can accept a small mismatch between a curved bezel and a flat one, I can just drop in the later model. Problem solved, I think, so I appreciate your quick responses.
