Solid state cooling fans

#1 Post by gator » Wed Mar 19, 2008 3:57 pm

I saw this news article yesterdaay about the design of a solid state cooling fan with NO moving parts.

http://www.thorrn.com/technology.html

Some info and a video in the below links:
http://gizmodo.com/369398/microchip+siz ... ving-parts
http://gizmodo.com/369860/video-rsd5-so ... -in-action

It is very impressive to see the video of the fan in action. Of course there are concerns about interference that might be inevitable with this design, but it is a very very innovative idea. I hope to see this in future computers.

I remember from some of the copier factory training classes I've been to they harp on the fact that a byproduct of corona discharge is ozone which is supposed to be a health hazard. So much so that all copiers have ozone filters to cut down on the release. Don't see that mentioned here :??:

Neat technology, but what is the practical point? With a good fan (decent bearings), the vast majority of the noise is that of air itself moving, which isn't going to go away. The power required for a fan pales in comparison to what wireless technologies are eating up. Potentially smaller footprint is the only benefit I see - and machines which can't fit a fan tend to use CPUs which can go fanless, anyway.

Nitpick: "solid state fan" is a bit of a oxymoron.

Reliability - for one. No moving parts means lesser chances of failure. I agree that power savings (if any) is not going to be much .. also as Mike mentioned, safety is a concern too.

Isn't this the same idea as those things from The Sharper Image?

EDIT: What is a corona discharge? Sounds like something that happens after a night of bar-hopping
