Order Vista and you get XP pro too!!!???

#1 Post by Bfskinnerpunk » Thu Mar 20, 2008 10:21 am

Reading in another thread, I see that those who ordered Vista Business or Ultimate also recieved a downgrade to XP!

First, is this true? You get full XP pro and Vista in the same box?
From what I understand, the XP is on the recovery disk or something.

It seems to be that I should have ordered Vista!

So even though my computer arrives on Friday, can I call Lenovo and tell them that I changed my mind and want Vista Business?

Will they allow me to pay the difference and send it out? (I think it's only $35 more than XP on their web site.)

In stores, Windows XP pro is $199! It would be one heck of a bargain if I could get Vista and XP in a single purchase.

Man, I should have been reading this forum before making the purchase!

Thanks (I guess)

I'm on the phone (waiting) now to talk to a Lenovo rep... hoping they will send out some disks for Vista Business or Ultimate for a reasonable fee.

I still want to use XP for now, but I want the option of moving up to Vista (cheaply) once Microsoft gets their act together.

Frankly, I am absolutely aching to become a Linux guy... but they're going to have to make it more user friendly for a guy like me. They are close!

I called the generic Lenovo help line... just dialing "0" after hearing the menu options.

She said I'd need to call Microsoft... and she said it in a very generic - pat way, so perhaps there is a more authoritative source I could call?

No, you've left it far too late to do that.

Its the same answer as to your similar post in another thread. If you ordered a ThinkPad with XP you get an XP licence and COA. If you now want a Vista licence you need to buy one retail, as Lenovo can't sell you Vista if you do not have a Vista licence and COA.

You've made your choice, so you now have to live with it.

I suspected as much... it's just that I seemed to find that other were getting discs sent to them from Lenovo.

In the end, I don't actually want Vista, but I am trying to prepare for an eventual launch of Microsoft's non-Vista (7?).

Somehow, I have the idea that Vista users will be allowed to "upgrade" while XP users will have to buy the fully retail version.

Oh, what the heck. I suppose it's trivial money.

Thanks and sorry for the double post.

both XP and vista will be offered the same upgrade path as so many users have decided to skip vista entirely.   microsoft would be shooting themselves in the feet otherwise.

as so many users have decided to skip vista entirely.
Seems like MS has set kind of a new precedent with the so called "upgrade/downgrade (select proper word here) from vista to xp"

They SHOULD be giving Vista away the same way AOL used to send out a disk a month in those cool metal boxes.

the same thing happened to me - i use the forum constantly but didn't check on these OS matters. i knew Ultimate offered downgrade rights, but wasn't aware that Business does too. i ordered my new machine w/ Home Premium figuring it wouldn't be expensive or an ordeal to install XP Pro. well i couldn't have been more wrong!

is there something Lenovo can do about it?? :?: after all, the "help me decide" utility on the configuring & purchasing page doesn't provide downgrade info. i find that neglectful, especially considering how many people drop Vista for XP

who knew XP was going to sell for $140+ now? or $250 if you by straight from MicroSoft? that's ridiculous! if i buy a used copy, there's no way to know if the key will be valid, until it's too late. MicroSoft is blind if they think people (who know anything about computers) prefer their new & "improved" OS. my 5+ year old A31 runs faster w/ XP than my brand new R61 on Vista with the same amount of ram :!: IMO Vista is a steaming pile o' ... (you get the idea).

sorry for the rant - i just want to be able to start configuring my brand new machine and am completely stuck until i can find an inexpensive way to get XP on it legally. :(

any suggestions would be more than welcome...
