A31/p RAM limit?

#1 Post by sjthinkpader » Thu Mar 20, 2008 8:59 pm

According to www.lenovo.com, A31/p has 1GB RAM limit.

Overview ThinkPad A31/p

But I have a 1GB plus a 512MB SODIMM in my A31 (2652-D5U)

1.5MB

What gives?

Most likely what happened is that the specs were written in the day when 1GB modules were not yet offered or the BIOS may not have been able to support them. As the years went by (that page you referenced was last updated July 2005) and technology advanced, nobody bothered or noticed that some information had been obsoleted.

Great,

That 1GB SODIMM has 16 chips, which is a lot of capacitive loading. The 512MB is an 8 chip SODIMM. This makes 24 device loads on the address bus. I wonder if the machine will boot with 32 device loads.

Most of the T23s I use have two 16 chip 512MB modules installed in them. I've never had any problems (boot or operational) related to the use of these "lower density" modules; as opposed to using 8 chip 512MB modules. In fact, since the 600X requires the use of low density 256MB PC100 modules AND it has four chips on board, that's 36 devices. Of course that's no guarantee that the newer chipsets didn't skimp on the bus drivers. :)

It will boot. I've got 2Gb in my "main"rig, and have had many with the same configuration.
