Replacing fan on T42p

#1 Post by Utwig » Fri Mar 21, 2008 3:16 am

I have T42p 2373 HTG. The fan became a bit louder lately (imbalanced, vibrating, grinding).

If I want to make it quiet again, do I need to swap entire fan assembly or can I just replace the fan?

If just replacing the fan, which fan do I need to order?
If fan assembly (15" laptop, Firegl), I probably need the long assembly, right?

I haven't seen anyone change just the fan.

I would look for FRU 41W5204.

Well, ... almost, but not only for the fans, but for almost anything inside a PC... although for some components it is probably 10s or 100s of years, there are others much more prone to failure in the 2-10 years range, namely anything with moving parts (fans, hard disks, optical drives, ... ) or components such as the LCD inverter and/or backlight CFL have specially "short" average life. Also some electronic components are more 'sensible' (capacitors, mosfets,..)

So it is not fixed life, but you can expect a fan to fail after 10000-20000 hours working, or a backlight CFL also in the same range.

All this said, you can always find notable exceptions (components that last much more or much less than the average). :-)

i have removed the keyboard and cleaned the fan and it seems all the dust causing that huge noise, but still the noise is not gone 100% like it was few months back

but if it returns i think its time to replace or or maybe open it and oil it a bit.

because i noticed the fan does not spin smoothly when i spin it manually by hand, is that normal ? or i need to oil it to make it smoother ?

@Bashar,

Try not to spin the fan manually. Just remove the keyboard, dust out the fan, then power up the laptop to see the fan spinning.

i did dust the fan out, but just now the grin noise came back again although i cleaned it (without removing it from its place)

should i take the fan out and open it into parts then clean it out ?

@Bashar,

The fan might need some oiling. What i am referring to in my previous post is: do not use your finger to spin the fan. ;-)
