Watching HD on 30" or 24" do they support it ?

#1 Post by danny_isr » Fri Mar 21, 2008 4:54 pm

I'm on the market now for a new LCD for my thinkpad T61p.
i started looking on Dell 30" and HP. they are expensive but i thought , ok if i can watch HDTV on them . then i can justify the cost.
but after reading about them , seems they don't support HD resolution. am i wrong on that ? Is it possible to watch HD on them without "stretching" with the video card?
i don't mind black strips if they are not too large .

now for the second part of the question, 24" are much cheaper . Dell is $370 now. do they support HD picture ?

thanks Dan

Of course you can watch HD content with black bars on top (due to the difference between 16:9 and 8:5).

Do you have first hand experience with a 30" ?
i dont think this is so trivial...
because i was reading that people get black screen when trying 1080 resolution. unless their video card will stretch the picture back to 2560x1600....

"That said, the 3007 needs a dual link DVI signal, and because of the brain dead electronics in this beast, it only supports 2560 * 1600 and 1280 * 800. Please note, I am not joking, the highest end part by Dell supports two resolutions, you can't run 1920 * 1200 if you wanted to.

This means that any KVM needs to support dual link DVI at 2560 * 1600 with dual link HDCP or you get a black screen. It took me a while to figure out why I was seeing nothing when I first set it up. As far as I can tell, such a KVM does not exist, and I could not coax the monitor into displaying 1280 * 800 through the KVM even for testing purposes."

I think the larger concern here would be that a T61p doesn't support dual-link DVI to the best of my knowledge.

edit: to below: oh, I did not know that. Sorry.

it does if you use the docking station.

If you can get the Thinkpad to run 30" in its native 2560X1600 resolution, what's the problem? Your video player will stretch the image to fill the whole screen while keeping perspective correct by adding black bars on top. You don't have to run actually run 1920X1200 (or 1920X1080).
