Firefox 3 Beta 4 - WORKS GREAT

#1 Post by iamdmc » Sun Mar 23, 2008 2:06 am

I decided to finally try the new beta. I was getting tired of the gigantic memory leak on Firefox 2.12, and having been unimpressed with the first 2 betas of FFox 3, I skipped FFox3 beta 3.

Beta 4 has impressed me. Slightly faster load times is nice, but the fact that it doesn't take up 200MB of RAM for a couple of tabs is wonderful. I can't say I love the color scheme or the lack of support for some extensions (thank God that doesn't include flash block and ad block) but those are minor details.

I'd recommend trying it out.

yes, the 9mm SSD fits in the X220

I'm sticking with IE 6.0 and (sometimes) Opera. FireFox is just too slow on dial-up.

It works great! I have been using the betas since B1. Everyone of them has brought improvements along.

goofy,
Have you tried K-meleon? It is quite fast. Supposedly KHTML/Webkit is quite fast too. I think the best Win-implementation is Safari, though :(.
I remember using Opera back in the days when I used dial up. It was great since it could block every picture as default, and only load the ones needed.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it.

I loved FireFox Beta 3 and I love Beta 4 too! It is faster and since I use adblocking software its a lot better. I think that it is the best browser but thats just me.

I'm using FF 2.0.0.12 and just had a dozen tabs opened; Yahoo!, a few here at TPF, a couple at eBay, a .PDF file, a YouTube video running, sitting at abc.com, a 1.5MB photo, and a few more just at various web sites and FF never climbed above 165MB. This is with a T23 and 1024MB of memory and about 40 processes running. I don't have any FF extensions loaded so maybe that's the difference.

With FFox 3, it wouldn't even get that high.

Even before I began using extensions and had closed a lot of tabs (ie. had only about 3 open after browsing for an hour) the FFox 2 usage got as high as 1GB!!! More average is 300-500MB.

FFox 3 has used a max of 130MB of RAM in my experience so far, but seems to use more CPU. Tradeoff?
