A good time for RAM from Crucial.com !!Prices are dropping!!
I have been watching the price of a 512MB RAM for my T42 from crucial.com for a quite long time. The price initially was $129.99 and have been dropping few dollars every 10 days or so.
When I checked the price today it was $95.99 with free shipping and no tax in most states.
I don't know if the prices will keep dropping even more. Do you think it is a good deal or should I wait?

Re: A good time for RAM from Crucial.com !!Prices are droppi
Incorrect. There is a very simple suppy and demand situation in play here. At current virtually all fabs are still producing DDR and a few newer ones are running DDR2. Once there is a shift to most of them producing DDR2 and few DDR plants remain the prices will increase dramatically. Based on experience, I would estimate the rise in prices to be about 1 year out. The prices one has to pay for new ECC-Registered PC133 modules these days are practically highway robbery. You can already see this price trend starting to happen when you notice PC2100 modules that cost more than PC3200 modules with the same CAS and brand, etc, which in fact makes them worse comparatively in terms of how capable the memory chips are. This is nothing new to those of us who have been in the industry for a while. As the saying goes, "It's all about the timing."zandric wrote:As you know, the prices will keep dropping and dropping.... and dropping...
Z.
All that being said, I would imagine the sweet spot for DDR PC2700 to be about 6 months out. (meaning the lowest price it will reach) This will be followed by three months of equilibrium, then the prices will start to increase as the "big thing" to have for school and then the holidays will be DDR2. All the big companies will start dumping their DDR around the June-July time frame en masse to eliminate inventory so they can sell to the DDR2 buyers for school starting back. Right before the end of the 3rd quarter they usually drop a ton of good deals so they can have a good 4th quarter to round the year out with.
Note: I am not a certified financial advisor, blah blah blah...I am not responsible for anything that may happen as a result of anything I say, you are on your own to consult someone who is paid to advise you....etc etc...

Yes, this is a good approach. I wasn't suggesting you wait 6 months, sorry if it sounded like that.UCI_MECH wrote:I totally agree with lfeagan.
However, I cannot wait 4-6 months to get the additional RAM. Maybe I'll keep watching the prices for one or two more weeks before I buy.
Thanks lfeagan for your advice.

Newegg.com has a great deal on good ram, a 1gb module is $196. Many have used this ram and everyone says it works great. It also has a lifetime warranty.
