Custom install the first time X61 is turned on? HD opinion?

#1 Post by rmendoza » Sun Mar 23, 2008 12:11 pm

I ordered a x61 a couple of days ago (still "in process"), I will be giving my T60 to my wife, once the new TP arrives.

First, I was wondering if it was possible to access the installation files before I set up the x61. That is to say, can I tell it which programs to install /not install before I set it up? That way I wouldn't have to uninstall anything I didn't like.

Second, I ordered 160GB, 7k200, not the 200GB, since the price difference was significant, and the extra space wasn't going to make a difference for me. However, I now got to thinking, is there a difference between these two, besides the space?

And last, I ordered it with just 1GB of RAM, since I have an extra GB laying around. Can I install this before I even turn it on for the first time? I don't think this would be a problem, but I thought I would ask, just in case.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I did look at that page, but it refers to a clean install after you already have everything installed (i.e. a clean re-install). I was just wondering whether this could be done before you even got the windows screen for the first time.

1. To perform custom restore do this:

a. Turn off your machine.
b. Power it up and carefully observe the display. Look for the logo screen. At any time, while the logo screen is onscreen, press ThinkVantage Blue Button or F11.
c. Once Rescue and Recovery Predesktop area fully initiates, you'll see many option on the top and left side of your screen.
d. Under "Rescue and Restore" press "Restore your system".

At some point you'll be presented with custom restore option
2. I don't think there is any significant difference in the drives apart from speed.

3. Yes, you can install the DIMM even before turning on the machine. Remember unlike T6x, the RAM compartment is on the bottom on X6x series.

With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
