Power-on Password locked T23

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon Mar 24, 2008 2:24 pm

I just got a T23 which has 'only' the Power-on Password locked.

After (just for fun) trying it 3 times with a different password, a Hand in a Stop sign pops up next to the POP-icon. After reboot, the POP comes up again.

According to the instructions on IBM's webpage here all you need to do is remove the CMOS battery, bootup and it should be gone.
But it still keeps popping up without the CMOS battery, after complaining that date/time is not correct.

How long does the CMOS battery have to stay out, until that password is cleared?

Since you were prompted for date/time then the cmos battery has been out long enough.
Take a close look on the icon you are prompted with - according to your own link, there are difference icons for
the various password prompts.

Actually I think with the T23s the POP and SVP lock icons look the same (padlock with a "monitor" or boxy image of a computer to the lower left). Newer systems (how much newer, I don't know) do have a different icon for the POP and SVP screen as shown on the Support page. I just booted the T23 I'm using and accessed the BIOS, which I keep locked, and it has the same icon as shown in the poweronpwrd.gif image. As SMA says, if the laptop says that the date and time were lost, that should be good enough to also remove the POP. What's left then is an SVP.

It definitely shows a screen (as in the image attached), not a head.
Just tried it now (without any batteries, only on AC).
Same POP plus the Hand/Stop sign after 3 tries.
