R40 Problem: Slow drive access
R40 Problem: Slow drive access
Hi,
I've been having a problem with my R40. Drive access is very slow when it is connected to the network either by wire or wireless. It takes about 2 minutes before it starts to open a file!! The whole thing just freezes until the file is open. But if I disconnect from the network, everything goes back to normal.
Any idea on what is wrong?
Thanks.

Do you have the NICs set to off when switching in AC? Another words, when you switch to wired, do you set the wireless NIC to off and vice-versa?
Do you have any network drive mapped but not connected?
Do you clean the internet file cache once in a while?

My drive is using DMA mode. I don't think the problem is the HD. I have defragged my HD, cleaned the registry, and uninstalled unnecessary programs. I can't figure out why the HD access slows down only when I connect to the network.
When I'm not in the network, drive access is very fast. When I connect to the network either wired or wifi or both, my computer freezes for a few minutes (2-5min) before it starts to access the drive and run a program. The program would run fine until I open another program and the whole thing freezes again.
I have already removed all my mapped network drives and have installed the latest drivers (network card, IDE controller, etc.). It is my R40 that is having this problem. My T61 doesn't have this problem. My R40 has 1.25GB RAM and an 80GB (5400rpm) HDD.
Thanks,
Chris
