I need someone to ease my mind about a used T41p

#1 Post by MrStaticVoid » Mon May 31, 2004 7:04 pm

I have been looking for good prices on T41p's for some time now through Ebay and all. I have even been looking at the IBM Certified Used products available at ibm.com. They had been sold out of T41p's for a while but this Friday I saw that they had some. I jumped on the opportunity to get one at $2000 before they had sold out again. I didn't care that it was used. So I bought it. They say it would ship the next business day which is tomorrow (Tuesday) because of the holiday today. I just need someone to ease my mind a bit so I can relax the next few days as it is shipping. I bought the 2373XQX. The web site said it had the a/b/g wifi card in it so am I correct in assuming that it is just a used 2373GEU? Will I receive a laptop full of dead pixels, scratches, and other problems or can I trust that IBM will send me a good looking product. I have heard of people receiving older models in perfect condition, but I doubt that is true of the T41p. Also, the web site said it would include a refurbished battery. Since this is a T41p, will that refurbished battery be a 9-cell? I hope so.

I hope someone has had some experience with the IBM Certified Used notebooks. I just can't stand wondering anymore.

I do have another question. I think I have heard that IBM sells international keyboards that one could use to replace the one it comes with. Does anyone know if they sell Dvorak keyboards? I can type Dvorak on a QWERTY board, but a real Dvorak keyboard makes it looks so much better.

Thanks.

A) You'll want to loose your signature. We have some very dedicated old-timers on this forum that are extremely helpful but have to connect through very low-bandwidth connections due to location. Moving to PHP was bad enough, but graphic signatures kill that bandwidth. We all try to do this out of courtesy to our fellow forum members.

now on to your questions..
It said it had the a/b/g wifi card in it so am I correct in assuming that it is just a used 2373GEU?
Most likely.
Will I receive a laptop full of dead pixels, scratches, and other problems or can I trust that IBM will send me a good looking product.
They send a good product. Usually it will look just like new. You still have a return window (7 days) on a refurbished thinkpad with no restock fee. IBM has no interest in disappointing customers or getting returns.
...but I doubt that is true of the T41p
Why not? IBM usually sells fleets of thinkpads to businesses. They end up with lots of overstock or minor items they can fix and resell or even just boxes that have been opened (after which, they won't sell "as new")
Since this is a T41p, will that refurbished battery be a 9-cell?
From IBM's site on your model:
2373-XQX support
Product description

Based on 2373-GEU: P M 1.7GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 128MB Fire GL T2, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), 802.11a/b/g Wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 9c battery, WinXP Pro
So yes on the 9 cell battery and yes on the model being a 2373GEU. :D
Have fun with your new thinkpad!

Wow...that was fast. Sorry about the signature. I checked the FAQ to see if they were allowed and it said nothing about it. Someone should edit the FAQ.

Anyways, I appreciate your answers on questions that I probably should have asked before I bought.

This seems like a really nice community and I look forward to participating in it.

This version of the forum is still new... (I think now just a month old) so the FAQ is still a "work in progress." Eventually those items will make it in there; until then one of the older members will gently inform new members.

Welcome to the community.

800-388-7080 is IBM Boulder Parts..

if for a different language, then it might be easier to order from your country of origin as foreign language keyboards are less likely to be in the USA as they would the "native" country..

DVORAK keyboards have never, to my knowledge, been offered on thinkpads OR by IBM as accessories..

IRT the 2373XQX.. it sounds like a refurb..
could be anything from a never opend brand new to one on the other end of the spectrum..

IRT stuck pixels: you are taking the usual gamble, but with worse odds..
the "standard" is always changing but it is more than two or three stuck pixels..
Full of stuck pixels is not going to happen..

for myself i would always go for one with the full 3 year warranty..
and the correct designation, i.e. 2373GEU..
